I had a guest come in wanting to take advantage of the buy 3 get a $5 gift card offer in the ad (on the toilet paper on the back of the ad, at least in my region).

She bought over 20 of the Clorox bleach bottles ($1.89 each) that are also listed on that page. When the register did not prompt for a ton of gift cards, she checked out and went to guest services. My SDTM called me over, and the guest wanted to know why she did not receive gift cards. I did a price inquiry for everything on the page, and the TP was the only item included in the offer. I explained that the 3 bottles were only $5.67, so a $5 gift card would not be offered on that item. She threatened to call corporate, so I called LOD. She also explained that it was not part of the offer. I offered to do an override for a gift card for 3 of the bottles, but she just wanted the guest relations number and her money back for all of the bleach.

I know our ad's can be misleading sometimes, but really....a $5 gift card on items you're barely paying more than $5 for. I'm pretty sure Target wants to make money.

What would you have done?

We limit those assholes
Fuck corp, they screwed us out of 2100$ for some cribs that were clearly out of the dumpster on some claim of a recall 4 years ago.
I love srtl lods, they'll hang the fuck up

I was curious so I looked up the ad.

Definitely confusing, especially with the light green box on the opposite page. I would have limited it to one three bleach purchase and that's it. It does say any 3 items listed and it doesn't make it clear that it's only for Quilted Northern or Angel Soft. It should have said something like "any 3 items listed below" or had it's own shaded box or something.

I would've relayed understanding/apologized and offered to honor it for 2 gift cards and return the other 12 bleaches if the guest would like. If that isn't acceptable, then I'm happy to call the LOD. She'd only be wasting her time and would probably end up leaving with no bleach and no giftcards. JS. I'd also have to make sure she knows she could save an extra 5% on the bleach with a REDcard!! :D

It's really only confusing when placed beside the green box. Otherwise, with the dividers, it's pretty clear that it is only for the Quilted Northern. In my opinion.

But even the shelf signs are not clear, I will have to snap a pic. Cause they to me were as clear as the ad picture above.. Clear as mud.. I told a guest from reading a sign since she asked me if it was any of the items on the sign, I told her to watch them ring up in case it didn't prompt for the GC.. And to not go crazy and be nice..

Picture of shelf sign that isn't clear and why I could see people could think they could mix and match products. My advice to guests if it has this sign, watch it ring up and make sure you get the GC.

Could spot make it anymore confusing? These signs are all over our Chemical/paper dept.

But that doesn't have anything to do with the $5 gift card we are discussing for the Angel Soft or Quilted Northern that's on the previous page.

It doesn't help.. To many different offers..

The problem is.. whether it's confusing or not.. guests who apparently think they get something for next to nothing! If it's too good to be true, it almost always is. When did people forget this?! When I'm shopping, I know better than to not look for fine print. That isn't because I work for a company that makes misleading signs. It's because I'm not a fool!

Because they're self-entitled jerks that still hold to the archaic belief that "the customer is ALWAYS right".
They've got nothing to lose so they figure if they argue long & loud enough that you'll give in to their unreasonable demands just to get rid of them.

Our "guests" went above and beyond threatening to call corporate. They pretended to have called corporate. One of their husbands called, said he was from corporate and was getting complaints about our LOD, and asked why we were not honoring the sale in question that was "clearly advertised". When asked what his official position at corporate was and which location he worked at he got angry and hung up.

LOL Can we just rename this thread "Things people at Target will do for $5..."?

Target's ads may not always be clear, but it seems like every week I walk into the Walmart where I work and there is at least one apology sign at each entrance because something in the ad was wrong. This is the largest company in the world and every week something in the ad is wrong? Do they not hire proofreaders? In a certain sense, it's pure comedy gold but it's embarrassing. Fortunately, I'm not a cashier, so I don't have to deal with customers being asshats but the stories the cashiers tell sometimes....

They're not dumb, they're taking advantage of the Vibe. Our LODs are reaching the same conclusions we at guest services already knew: It's the same guests that are willfully ignorant.

You want to call corporate? Be my guest.

Yes, there is too much verbage on the sign, BUT it says "as signed" .. if the item isnt signed with that sign, it is not part of the deal . that's what I get from the sign. You are completely right to tell the guest to look for that sign and not flip out. If they dont flip out and arent getting an item for an insanely low price.... VIBE

One you read enough of these signs it is actually clear. If the item is one those brands, has a sign with the same verbiage, and they but enough-they get the gc. I always offer to check in item search they get worried if it's included.

What I love is the number of people who will come up and tell me they were supposed to get a gift card with an item. I don't even have to look it up to know that the problem is that they only bought one of the item when they needed to buy two (or more) for the gift card. But I dutifully scan the item, show them that they have to buy multiples, and the next statement out of their mouth is always the same. "Well, it doesn't say that on the sign."

Seriously, is there a class out there that I am missing out on that teaches people to say these things? Because I don't even have to go back there to look at the sign to know that it does say that on the sign, and they just can't/don't read.

I usually get the more passive aggressive response:

"That's not what I read on the sign."

It makes me bite my tongue so as to not suggest that next time they read what's actually on the sign in that case.

My favorite thing is when guests say "they sign didn't say" and then I go back there and the sign does, in fact, say. I don't even know how to be tactful when pointing that out.
