How do you know if your an ETL if you are going to be termed? I'm not liking the vibe im getting from my stl and dtl

If you are out of training, it's not just that easy to terminate you. You will have to go through Corrective Action - that takes time, and you WILL know it is happening. Of course if you screw up big, it can be much faster, but again, you WILL know it is happening.

I don't even trust them to ask the question.. Is it things I can pick up on that I should take note of

My comment was (kind of) tongue and cheek, but based on your comment - management might not be your calling in life. I realize there are personality issues, but to make a blanket statement that you don't trust them - there's bigger issues!

If you're new the expectation is that you're going to suck it big time for about a year, but you have to show progression towards improvement. If you keep accumulating more opportunities than wins within the first year you may want to find another job before they ask you to resign. There are generally two ways they will let you know they are going to term you:

1) Ask you to quit so it doesn't look bad that you are getting termed
2) They put you on CA

From my experience, I've noticed that ETLs only go on CA if they are going to get fired. It is rare for an ETL to be put on a CA and then show amazing improvement. It happens but rarely. Putting an ETL on CA basically means they've tried to fix you but now they are going to start the process to terminate you. This process is lengthy as long as you don't help them - meaning don't lose your keys, lock the doors and set the alarm before leaving, follow all the rules, etc.

Also, a CA for ETLs is more paperwork than a CA for TMs. Meaning, district level personnel have to approve of the CA and the grounds for being put on a CA.

what kind of "vibe" are you getting from them? what has been the feedback from your trainer and STL on your performance during training?

Agreed with all of the above. I was going down the CA path because I continually butted heads with both my Sr. Merch and STL. I called stupid ideas stupid. I would have a set of aisles zoned to planogram, and send all the backstop over to the warehouse for backstock so research could fill the numerous holes that were being stuffed full of incorrect product by flow - only to have both of the above yell at me, bring all the stuff BACK over from the warehouse and push it out again, screwing up the zone - and then get yelled at about poor zone and what am I doing to fix it? I got tired of it.

Once CA was initiated, I put forth action plans that both Sr. Merch and STL signed off on as good ideas, but then later condemned. Again, I got tired. I later found out that another ETL I worked with left before he could get termed, also following all the advice the above two were giving him - but like me, he was one step from final as he would not drink the koolaid. He went on to another retailer as management and is doing quite well there.

So I stand by my original statement: if they want to put you on CA, you will know.

If you don't drink the koolade and fit in, they make your life hell. I feel like I'm not wanted and I'm left out of loop of things. I'm not on CA yet.

In your ca they should have laid out expectations and what they want to see out of you for improvement. How long have you been in position? It takes a lot to train a new ETL and it costs a lot of money for the company so I would say that they want you to do well. I would recommend doing what they have asked you to do and ask for regular feedback so you know if you are on track. It also shows that you care and want to have your job.

PM me if you want to talk more about this

Been there. Done that. Seen it done by others. Usually a waste of time. In my experience, once they start down the CA path for an ETL, they want you out.

I've seen it go both ways. Usually when the party on the ca makes improvements it turns out well. Most of the time...
