So I’ve been with my store for about 5 months now and I absolutely love it. But I was wondering if there is anyway to get trained in CO. I have experience counting with another job of mine and I think it would be really cool if I could count at spot too. Any tips?

Doesn't hurt to ask. We like to have backups for vacations and callouts etc.

Problem is q4 would have been the best time to train for it. Your store might not have the extra hours to train a person they may not even need.

Depends on how many people they already have trained.

Best practice is to use GSAs for Cash Office, but a lot of stores still have former CO specialists or just veteran TMs in there. Stores need at least 2 people trained in CO to cover the week, but having 3-5 trained is ideal for call outs and vacations. You don’t want too many folks in there though...too many hands in the honeypot.

You need to be very trustworthy and organized. If ETL-GE or AP has any doubts regarding your honesty or ability, you won’t be in there.

That said, it’s a great workcenter once you get the hang of it. Cash office shifts are my favorite! No one bothering you and the time flies by.

As a manager for a different company previously, someone asking to be cash office trained would set off alarm bells, especially if they weren't already in a related position.

I get that but it’s just another job that i would really like to do.

You'd have to see if there's a need at your store first & if there are hours for training.
Also depends on the level of trust your store expects.
My store only allowed 2-3 people to be entrusted with CO until one went on medical leave & another reduced their availability due to school so several had to be trained in a short time.

My experience with cash office is it's not something you ask to do its something you're asked to do
Understandable. So is it just wait it out and gain trust from the higher ups and hope they ask me?

It's more like "why does this person want to play with money in a room by themselves enough to ask to do it?"

If you are already doing service desk shifts and are a cashier, that's a lot different from someone from flow or the salesfloor.

Doing cash office opens you up to a lot of responsibility and even if you are 100% honest, if there's someone else who has access and isn't honest, they may use you as a scapegoat for their theft.

In all honesty I like to count (makes me sound like a nerd but whatever). And the peace and quiet would be a nice change of pace from all the guest.

And I already am a cashier so it’s not like I’ll just be popping up from the back room.

I truly wish they would train more people in there. Obviously I understand why they don't - but I am one of two team members that are trained for cash office at my store. I would much prefer to close but I have completely open availability while they other team member has limited availability. I rarely ask for days off but it sucks knowing I couldn't ask for something like a Tuesday or Wednesday off because they can't work those days so I HAVE to be scheduled in there those days. It would just make sense to have 4 or 5 people trained in there. We've had people ask and they are denied because they don't want a ton of people in there, but I really think it wouldn't hurt to have one more.

Back when I worked at OfficeMax, I ended up closing the cash office a lot even though I really shouldn't have been (too young, not a supervisor, etc. but there wasn't really anyone else) and I loved it. I'm not a people person, really, so an hour or so by myself in the office, tunes cranked was awesome, despite the tedium of counting cash and dealing with checks and credit card receipts and all that. My favorite job to date, though, was the summer I spent in my college library basement fixing the bindings on hundreds of books. It was solitary and quiet and totally amazing.

But OM was a much smaller operation than the Target I work at, so cash office was really only done at close, when the registers were closed out. I have no idea what it looks like at a Target that brought in over $400K yesterday.

When I got denied for GSA my GSTL offered me training in CO. All depends on the need. Just be mindful of how you ask and who you ask.

If you're a cashier work on becoming a GSA. That's your gateway to CO. Like other said in my store it's two people. One is a GSA the other has been with the store since it opened and only does CO. Now I'm trained for CO and one other GSTL is. We only do it when one of the two is on vacation or has an emergency.

If you're a GSA and ask to be trained in the CO that won't raise any eyebrows. Just a team member will though even if you're simply interested in the position.

I started out as a cashier shifted over to guest service and one service desk shift I was put in cash office early in the morning with the trained gsa by my old GE and had me get trained... for me personally being CO trained as a GSTM helped me move higher as a minor

Also I worked for Target for 9 years at that point, had been cashiering for 5 years and gained a lot of trust and showed I was responsible.

mine too! on my last day at spot I wore slippers and put my feet up, took my sweet time finished in 3 hours and then did some cleaning and organizing.
