Hey! So let me preface this with saying I really like retail. I'm good at it. Selling people on a product is fun to me, and the side of me that loves to organize things digs the zoning process of retail. I've been at a Walmart in the Electronics/Photo/Wireless/Toy dept for almost five years now. It's been pretty okay. I transferred one store because the management team ran a skeleton crew, and things were GLORIOUS at my new Walmart store. However, now since Walmart started handing out raises they've cut hours massively. I've never had weeks of only 9 hours before (I'm part time but still...I'm used to 20-30 hours!). I've got 9 hours this week, 16 next week, and I'm not even scheduled on the week after that. So I'm needing a change of venue. I'd like to stay in retail. So one of my buddies works at a Target overnight and says that his store is hiring and I should apply.

My local Target is hiring for "Sales Floor Team Member." From what I've gathered from the job description, it seems as though it's essentially like maintaining the sales floor? Putting back returns, zoning all depts, etc. I kind of dig that. I've never done an entire store before but...I'd assume people are put into certain areas or something? Would we work freight and set displays up too or is that another team? Do Sales Floor Team Members also man a register?

Has anyone else made the jump from Walmart to Target...or even vice versa? Trying to get a handle on the different environments.

I'm sorry if this isn't the forum for it. My buddy couldn't tell me much about the position but told me posting on this website might help a bit. I'm definitely going to leave my current job if the next schedule they give me has less than 25 hours. Just trying to find something better, and I kind of like what I see at Target, but I'm not sure how it works on the inside.

Salesfloor gets the worst hours in my store out of all other departments it seems. So you'll still have weeks were you get 9 to 16 hours, then suddenly 32 hours...and then back down to 16. How many hours you get will depend entirely on how well your local Target does, and how well they schedule people.

Yes, you will be trained for Cashiering for when help is needed, which is good for you too. Knowing more than one department means you get more hours. Make yourself a valuable asset, make friends with the right people, and you'll get hours. Seems to be the ways of retail. I only assume it's the same at Walmart.

@GSAhole made the transition from Target to Walmart. Hopefully she'll be online to reply here?

What I want to know is...is it possible to work both? It's like cheating. Lol. Just make sure they never find out about each other.

Target does the same type of scheduling too.
Exactly this. You might notice a bump in hours if you started working at Target while they cut others' hours to accommodate new hires, but you're not really promised anything above 18 - 23 hours a week (if that) if you're salesfloor and/or front end.

My store is different. All tms who want as many hours as possible have gotten over 30 hours a week. The only exception was one or two slow weeks in Jan/Feb. Part timers get their requested amount too. I think it depends a lot on your store volume. No one ever gets single digit weeks or no hours at all. The only exception to this is our special needs TMs who are not cashier-trained.

During the slow months, my hours never dropped below 25 and I was always able to pick up a few extra hours because of call outs etc to get the 31.5 required hours for benefits. At my store, we can tell HR and our TL to be put on a list to be called first if there is a call out.

Consider flowteam if you are able to lift and carry. They generally get hours because they unload and stock. Rigorous work however.

Wish that were true. but ASANTS 😱
if you're interested in Flow be prepared for low hours, high stress, and lots of sweat.

I generally get anywhere from 35-40 hours every week. After the holidays last year, I don't think I dropped under 25 hours. After the holidays this year, I had a week when I had 17 hours, then my hours climbed back up. It does help that I am cross trained in a few areas and I would hope my leadership likes me lmao

Apply, and then try to learn as many areas of the store as you can.... cashiering, guest service, salesfloor, fitting room, instocks, flow (truck unload and stocking) and Back Room.

If so inclined, you can try for electronics or the grocery area. Both are specialized areas of the salesfloor.

Some people are a good fit at Starbucks or Food Avenue (snack bar.)

The more areas you learn, the better your chances for getting more hours.
