Because when Russia - or any other entity that goes on a world conquest tour - runs out of places to take over, they'll set their sights on 'Murica but by then, we'll no longer have any allies.
And soon Sarah Palin won't be the only one who can see Russia from her house.

If doing the right thing happens to align with what Putin wants, I'm not gonna complain.

It'd be like if Putin somehow decided he thought America should institute universal healthcare or free college. I'm not going to be opposed to it just because Russia wants it.

I was anti-war then and I'm still anti-war.

Too bad our dumb country can't accept that our fight in Afghanistan was a failure.

On the flip side, thanks to my going to Afghanistan, I went from being a shit-tier libertarian to a socialist.

Here's the thing, when it comes to diplomacy people (and the countries they represent) have to know you are true to your word.
This goes both ways, they need to know that if you are fucked with there will be swift and horrible consequences so it never happens.
But they also have to know that when you say you will back them up, you will be there.
In Syria we made promises to the Kurds that we are walking away from just so Putin will have his warm water port (the same reason he is fucking with the Ukraine).
The Link Between Putin’s Military Campaigns in Syria and Ukraine - The Atlantic - https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/10/navy-base-syria-crimea-putin/408694/

If we want to be able to have any standing in the world community, we have to keep our damned promises.
To everyone who thinks we can go it alone and who gives a fuck about the rest of the world, read some fucking history.
That hasn't been true since the turn of the century and has only gotten less true every day since then.

Unironically this.

And then we can invade Europe and remind them that they need us more than we need them

Speaking of lolbertarians, do any other former lolbertarians want to share their story about ~that exact moment~ when you realized that lolbertarianism is a huge meme? I only labeled myself an ancap for a couple years in my late teens but basically working at Walmart snapped me out of it. This is apparently a pretty common story judging from what I’ve read online: edgy teenagers read Atlas Shrugged and/or Ron Paul, there’s a brief honeymoon and then they get hired at a megacorporation and realize that rule by CEO probably ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I was a Heinlein/Alaskan Libertarian.
The more anarchist, badass side of the party.
Even as a teenager I thought Rand was annoying.
I loved the idea of people helping themselves, owning what guns they wanted, learning anything they wanted, having group marriages, not judging anyone else, fighting monsters, being empowered, dropping rocks on the earth.
Yeah, moving out on my own at 17 and having to work for a living kind of turned that on its head.
I still loved the idea, just realized it magic thinking.

As Polanyi wrote, libertarianism is nothing more than utopian thinking that can never be realized in the actual world. People will never allow themselves to be subject to market forces to that degree. Fortunately, I was spared from ever believing in that crap. Found Marx in the school library when I was a freshman not Ayn Rand.

I believe in free markets but nowhere near to the degree as lolbertarians. Unregulated free markets allowed for old school company towns that paid you in company cash that was worthless anywhere else and kept you in debt, absolute garbage working conditions, and ultimately the Great Depression. Modern libertarians would scream bloody murder if they ever had to actually live in those conditions.

Personally, I love the lolbertarian home owners that whine about things like HOAs. There's your free market code enforcement. Don't like it? Do something about it or move.

I came to a weird sudden realization last night that kept me up.

Everyone in my personal life knows I practically live and breathe politics. I do a lot of research, and offer my "annoying thoughts" on it frequently.

I'm not 100% certain or positive on this, but I'd like to see myself run as a potential candidate in 2022 as a state representative for MN. At least run for a city council position. I would be 22 years old.

I would probably run as a Democrat. I stayed up all night on accident thinking about how I would run. How I would advertise, let the word out, etc...

My only issue is zero college experience or prior political background. Running for city council and actually winning probably only means I make only $8000 a year.

State representative salaries start at $34,000 a year.

Senators starting at $45,000.

Since I would be running with nothing, I would have to have a campaign ran and funded by the people. Being in a deep red district, no idea if it's feasible.

I would need to do something radical, something to rally my demographic to. A perfect run for me would be college rallies, widespread Facebook ad campaign, a relatively large social media presence, and the spirit to rally everyone behind me under the notion of a big political defeat in a deep red district.

But, nothing hardly ever comes to fruition. Needed a trusted place to thought vomit before telling my friends and family this is something I am considering down the line. I could run for city council in a heart beat, only requirement is I live in the city and 18 or older.

Try volunteering for a campaign next election cycle and see what it's like running a campaign on the ground first hand. Go to city council and school board meetings, listen to what people are talking about and develop your thoughts on the matter. Go to your local Democratic Party club meetings and network with people. Get your face out there and let them know you'd be interested in running a campaign of your own in the future.

Just stumbled across a ridiculously cringy political cartoon of John “Inflicting pain for maximum gain” McCain at the pearly gates. Way too cringy to post but imagine a shitty artist drawing a shitty cartoon eulogizing a warmonger. Y i k e s

I saw this as well. I personally hope she doesn’t get the nomination. Keep hearing things about Bernie or Biden possibly running as well. I love Bernie but I’m afraid he wouldn’t be able to win. I’d prefer Beto instead.

I think a Warren/Beto ticket would be perfect.

I guess I see Beto as a empty suit moderate with some charisma. Kind of like Bill Clinton and Obama. Not interested. Give me Bernie. If not him, Warren will do until AOC can run.
