I'm in a dire financial situation and I need more money now. Do I have a path forward with Target in the near future?

I'm in a really bad financial situation. I've been able to live comfortably on my $18 an hour by splitting all living expenses with a roommate, but I'm about to be in a position where I no longer have a roommate. I'd rather not go into details, but I'm on my own sooner than later and I don't have any other options other than just living on my own. Based off of the average rent of a single apartment in my area, I'd need at least $25 an hour to be able to support myself. So you're probably thinking that I could just look into promoting to a TL and getting that raise, but I'm not in a position where I can afford to just sit around and wait months or even years for a promotion. I need the extra money now. I can wait maybe a month, but that's it. My store doesn't have any TL openings and there are already several other team members who have been in development for a while and I know that they're basically ahead in the queue for a promotion.

I'm comfortable here at Target and I'd like to know if I have any realistic path continuing forward with the company given my situation. I'm desperate and I'll look for a better paying job if I really have to, but I'd like to know my options with Target first. What would I say to a TL or ETL given my predicament? "Hey, I'd like to promote to a TL, but I need it to happen within a month and I'd like to pass ahead of the several other team members who have been in development longer than me." I remember the last time I put in my two weeks, my ETL and SD both convinced me to rescind the notice and they gave me a dollar raise to stay, but I don't see a situation where they give me a 7 dollar raise if it means staying. What should I do?

If you need funds sooner rather than later, brush up your resume and look for supplementary employment/ 2nd job. From what you have said about your development, your last in the queue or somewhere at the bottom of the barrel. At least if you’re looking elsewhere for employment, you got a good chance of 1) Finding employment in your salary range that you want and need currently. 2) You haven’t left Target 🎯 yet, so maybe a slim chance in 2044 you get promoted. Good luck 👍🏾

Your realistic options are a 2nd job, a cheaper place, or a roommate (I'm excluding illegal activities of course). You could try selling some things on Facebook, Nextdoor or Ebay to help temporarily. Your HR at Target might have some ideas (and maybe even some cash) for you.
Tech jobs pay more if you have the skills. I have a buddy who does odd jobs installing tech things for companies. Also harder physical work usually pays more, think construction. You could work for ICE, I hear they have plenty of funds (do a bad job of it please, though, for your conscience).

Plenty of TMs work second jobs; I used to before my store decided it was better to give solid TMs more hours than to have a gazillion TMs working short shifts.

Might be smart to at least look for a new roommate, look for a second job, and take a hard look at your budget. A lot of people confuse "wants" with "needs" - if something is not necessary for survival (shelter, food, utilities, transportation), get brutally honest with yourself about where you can make some cutbacks. A lot of small savings can add up and help get you over this rough spot.

What department do you work in? In January most departments get hours cut. Some get cut drastically. Cashiers can drop as low as 20-25 hours a week. Fulfillment and drive up don’t lose much hours so, consider switching to one of those. December is usually good for some overtime. Make sure your leader or ETL knows you want overtime. What’s your availability? The more open your availability the more hours you get especially in January. Don’t call out unless an emergency or you are really sick. Calling out could make leaders think you don’t want to work and they can cut your hours. As far as being a leader it could be a long wait. Even if you’re qualified you have to wait for a position to become available. It could be months or years. You never when a team lead is going to quit. A second job is your best but, I would wait till January if possible. Things are so crazy busy at Target from now till January you might be too exhausted for a second job. Good Luck.
