So my ETL is trying to find the best place for me. He has mentioned a few times that Receiving might be a good fit. He said there are lots of great female Receivers.
What exactly does the Receiver do? And what qualities must a good Receiver have? Is it a lead position?

No not a lead position but you can take ownership of recieving.

You check in vendors, deal with ESIM, build CRC and Donate pallets, prepare the trailer for sweep, complete MIRS or recalls. I've seen plenty of female receivers and if they need help they ask backroom male TMS.

I was with Target for 10.5 years as the following positions up until 2016...

Cashier, Guest Service, Photo Lab, Cash Office Specialist, Guest Service Team Leader, Hardlines Team Leader, Flow Team Leader, Backroom/Instocks Team Leader, Senior Team Leader Flow/Backroom/Instocks, and Executive Team Leader Logistics... so I’ve basically seen it all and the reason I tell you this is... receiving/reverse logistics is the ONLY POSITION IN THE ENTIRE STORE besides MAYBE clerical that I would still be willing to work.

I don’t know if it’s worse now in 2019 and all stores are definitely not the same but if you get REALLY good at your job, receiving will be the lowest stress job in the store... as you’re learning it, not so much... and as I said, all stores are not the same.

The great thing is 99% of ETLs and TLs or leaders and leads or whatever they’re called now won’t know how to do your job... I've been gone from my original store for 4 years and the receiver there that I put in place is still the only one in the store that knows how to do the job.

The point of saying that is... if you do your job and you do a GOOD job, leadership is going to leave you alone in most stores, but perhaps not all.

If you aren’t looking to promote and you want a job with pretty consistent hours and not have to work weekends or nights except maybe once or twice a year... that’s your spot.

If you’re looking to promote, you should do something else.

The qualities you need are... being able to work alone with little direction quickly and efficiently... not needing an answer from leadership for every single little thing once you’ve learned the role... so again... independence... but also being able to communicate with vendors and leadership when necessary and appropriate.

Also multitasking is a must but that’s a Target thing in general right?

Receivers take care of sending product out of the store such as defectives and vendor chargebacks. They check in product, sometimes manually, from vendors and UPS/Fedex...

I would guess that a lot of receivers also help with ship from store as time permits...

I would say the biggest trait would be enjoying working alone and staying away from the politics and drama most everyone else in the store endures.

If it’s still like it used to be I would do that job in a heartbeat but I enjoy working alone and I’m a quick worker.

We have a great female receiver. She has been asked to promote before, and doesn't want to. She does help with ship to get all of her hours.
You should also have the ability to clean up messes every Monday and not let it bother you too much. The fact is, no matter how much you communicate, people will leave messes over the weekend.

Good position because your leaders will leave you alone..will be messes on Mondays but you can get on people not to screw up your backroom.

A good receiver is organized, firm with fenders and able to multi task. Used to be the highest paid TM position but Target screwed that up.

Your hours are also pretty consistent too. Asants but at our low volume store its a guaranteed 40, monday to friday

Female receiver here, trained with another female receiver and the receiver with the most years in receiving in our district is female. Being a girl in the position doesn't have a big impact on the job. There can be heavy lifting but it won't be that often and you can get help if you need it.

I usually get 40hrs but this time of year I've been knocked down to around 33 which isn't horrible in comparison to other people. It is super nice knowing that the latest I'll work is 2:30 unless I have to stay over and then that is my choice.

You have to have good organization in this position and people able to work by yourself without much direction after you get trained. There is a ton of stuff you need to do but once you get a system down it isn't bad.

Our receiver is a woman and she rocks that role and owns the it like a boss. One trait I think you definitely need is to be outspoken because people like to dump their problems back there and then the vendors need to be handled.

Since she is the only one who really knows the job she does get left alone but taking time off is hard. But she always gets her hours and it really is the only position in the store with a regular, m-f schedule that I can think of. It is a great role if you want to work lots of hours all year, have minimal supervision, never go to a huddle or get called to back up...it's a sweet gig if you are a good fit.

Hmm. This may very well be a good fit for me. I multitask like a boss. I LOVE cleaning the backroom and making bales. I’m very organized. I have grown beyond some of the tms that have been there for awhile. I guess I just have that drive to succeed and do my best. I definitely feel underutilized in the position I’m in now.

Go for it and let us know how it goes!! Congratulations!!!

Our HR likes to give our receiver 20 hour weeks and then sometimes randomly schedule other people for receiving that aren’t trained. I use to want to be receiver at our store once she retires, but not until that HR ETL is gone.

You got to keep your receiver happy. Ours just retired after 25 plus years. She was grumpy but she was grumpy with our vendors which made her great at our job. She was an older lady too so the physical requirements are doable. You should have a chair and desk, not sure all stores do but the three I worked at did. My first even had a computer for her.

Can someone please tell Miss Bitchy this? I pray for the day her reign of terror ends. I'm an older female receiver its definitely doable and most days I actually like my job. I would love for this woman to show me an ounce of recognition though. But hopefully her days are numbered.

i'm male... and i have 3 other targets in my area... i trained all 3 female receivers for those stores. All are wonderful and hard working.. and i told them straight-up that you will need to deal with alot, including TLs and higher who think they know how to do your job but don't. communicate with them, but do what works best. know which TLs to trust and which not to. you'll know this by how much they are micro-managing over your shoulder. they all have my phone # at work if they need help.

Seems like a good gig. There have been two receivers at my store the whole time I've worked there, so not a lot of turnover. If you get the chance at it, take it or you might miss out. Both female and "assertive". You need to keep TMs and vendors in line.

Receiving's not a bad spot, it's my favorite role I've had so far at target, but the pay's just not worth it. I've supported and covered as receiver for some years and had a chance to take it full-time, but that it's not even a "specialist" role anymore and makes base wages had me turn it down. Reliable hours and a steady schedule are a plus, but it comes with a lot of responsibility that you own solely; you're responsible for everything and everyone that comes in and out of that back door, plus plenty of other things. Making base wages for that is ridiculous.

I have a friend that is a receiver at my old store and loves it, as others have stated for the most part leadership will leave you alone. The only problem he ever had was a time when there was no back-up and he was told he could not take a vacation. That did not last long, as he Kidney Stones and had to be out of work for a few weeks. Upon his return they found someone for him to train, as a back-up and this person works receiving one day a week. I guess while he was gone the backroom team lead had to do this job, as she was only one trained to do it, other than the STL.

At least in my store, the job is physically demanding. I have to remove the skates from the truck every day, completely fill 5 sweep trucks 100% on my own, maintain a recieving trailer ( only space we have), so I'm constantly shifting pallets around, so I have room to sweep into that on the 2 days we dont have sweep trailers. Build a minimum of 3 salvage/crc pallets a day, plus all the vendor related headaches, pull & ship IRs..yadda yadda. I go home Wiped Out!

We have a female receiver, and her back-up for vacations is female as well. Like with any job, there are good and not-so-good parts. She gets irked about how TMs can't seem to figure out how to put folded repack boxes away. She starts her day with picking SFS orders, so while she consistently gets close to FT hours, it's not just doing receiving stuff. She seems to enjoy interacting with vendors and the folks who pick up our donated product.
