So when I was training as a cashier, I was told to take 5% off every item when someone applied for a red card, even if they're not approved right away. Then weeks later a GSTL came up to me and said "He just applied for a red card and got approved so you can take 5% off each item" and she put emphasis on the fact that im taking 5% off because he got approved. So basically my question is do you only take 5% off when they get approved? Because plenty of cashiers at my store get 10 red cards just because they say "Would you like to apply for a Target red card and save 5% off every purchase every day even if not approved" Just thought I'd ask since Black Fridays coming up and my GSTL said we'll get like 20 Red Cards each.

We give 5% off regardless if they got approved or not. If they got approved right away, the discount is automatic when they check out with their new temporary red card. If not approved, I figure out how much the 5% is off the total (before tax) and apply it as a store coupon.

Yeah at my store we're not to give the 5% off if they're not approved. The GSTL did tell me once that we could give it to them if we had to "fight for the application" and they looked like they're really upset about the 5%

How weird! My store is definitely all about the "you get the 5% regardless as long as you apply today." It was even on our training/script guidance things on every checklane for a long time.

Because plenty of cashiers at my store get 10 red cards just because they say "Would you like to apply for a Target red card and save 5% off every purchase every day even if not approved"
I do worry about THAT phrasing, though -- the guest should only get 5% the shopping trip they apply for the card, not "you're going to always get 5% even if not approved." This isn't a shopper's loyalty card and that is definitely not sticking to any book I would read. I mean, I guess ASANTS, but I'm surprised there are some stores who wouldn't give the 5% discount to an applicant even if it says it needs further review.

We used to do that until about a year and half ago when corporate sent out a memo saying AP would deal with anyone caught doing that.

a few months ago i gave a guy 5 dollars off for signing up even though he wasn't approved because i had to switch registers 3 times and had to scan all his items again. the registers kept crashing and it took like 10 minutes or longer. 5 dollars was more than he would've saved but i felt bad and it was an older guy. but that's the only time i'll do that or if they start getting upset about not saving the 5 percent.

At my store, 5% off all transactions that day (because some people apply at the SD first then go shopping) and free Starbucks even if they're not immediately approved.

I say 'not immediately approved' because needing further processing doesn't mean the guest is rejected- if they've moved or changed their name they just gotta double check who you say you are.

if they are approved we just use there temp card for the purchase

My store does this too. I never thought this was such a huge issue in some stores....

We give the guest 5% even if it needs further review. I know our ETL-GE does this I've seen her. She says do whatever it takes. I guess ASANTS but it's really not fair to compare stores with each other if some aren't offering the 5% while other offer the 5% and starbucks for applying haha. And the DMs are wondering why one store is doing so much better than this other...

"Would you like to apply for a Target red card and save 5% off every purchase every day even if not approved"

There's no way you should ever be saying that.

If your store wants to give them the 5% off if they apply and get rejected that's on them, but that wording is subtly encouraging guests to "apply" with fake information to intentionally not get approved just to get their 5% off.
