It’s sad to say but Marla is an unrealistic character. As fair-minded and sympathetic as she is, she would NEVER have really ended up in a store director position in real life, probably passed over for a clone of Stuart or some other corporate ass kisser. Or if she had managed to get her own store, she would be pushed out the very first time she argued with Stuart about sales goals or payroll. I get that some characters have plot armor to keep the story going, but anyone who’s ever worked under a Marla IRL knows how very briefly their careers tend to last.
Also, the fictional Grumbel’s is struggling to meet sales with no payroll, but a more realistic scenario would be one where the store is consistently beating sales every single week and STILL getting no payroll.
