I'm Lost! The REDCard Thread

At my store, 2 cashiers got hired around the same time. One asks every guest but doesn't put her heart into it and asks just for the sake of asking. Averages maybe one or 2 redcards a week. Otherwise does her job on the front end very well, has never called out, will come in every time we need her.
Cashier 2 has a way of getting many redcards in a week, she doesn't ask all the time, but still gets a minimum of 1-2 a day. Wanders away from her register, takes long breaks, has called out a few times, doesn't do much of anything when she isn't ringing out guests, but she gets the redcards..

Sadly, They kept cashier #2. I could have worked with cashier #1 and taught her how to ask and get more cards then she was getting - Her problem was that she was shy. Target didn't give her enough time to get groomed. Some people take longer then others. Shame on Target for making the Redcard rule the final choice.

Like what if you ALWAYS ask every single guest if they would like to save 5%, (explain the benefits) like free shipping all year long on target.com and 5% off orders online too etc and no matter what no one applies for one when your cashier?

can you really get fired if no one applies for one even if you always try?

Unless, i was thinking, start to be really desperate, and beg the guest to apply for one.

Say: Do you have a target red card with us so you can save 5%?

if they say no i dont want one, say please, or my manager might fire me. (with a sad face on)

OR say if you get one my manager might promote me.

i've had guests ask me, if i apply for the red card, will your manager give you a raise? one time i said yeah and the guy did the application
If you don't ask every guest...than yes you can get fired. Some ETLs are known to send there family members in there undercover and see if a cashier is asking or not.

That's very sick. Well I'm gonna start trying to force people to apply for a red card even if they refuse. If they refuse, I'll say why? Please get one today. You will save thousands a year.

And my manager might fire me if I don't get someone to sign up for one. Maybe if I beg people I'll get red cards

I've actually seen bad store reviews online where guest complain about cashiers asking if they want their red card all the time. It's a shame. But it's what we have to do. Even if it means forcing red cards on guests.

Apply for our red card today!

I'll give you a free bag of Hershey kisses! :)

You should. Some cashiers are known to tell guest it's just a "savings card" not a credit card.

my store manager is coming down on the front end manager hard about wanting red cards, if a cashier gets 2 a week they are lucky. i get many people who don't have a check. there should be a system where we can get credit for referring someone to sign up online, I would get about 2 a week that way. i got one in the last two months, but plenty of stink eye when i ask.

I agree with you. It does sound awful.

My question is, when cashiers are hired, are they told it's their job to get so many red cards a week? Not just in passing, but explicitly.
Yes, it is explained as a core role of being a cashier at my store. I do the first interview. If they don't think they are capable of selling the REDCard, there is no second interview.

Wow, this is getting quite sad. Normally, salespeople make a commission. Cashiers shouldn't be used as salespeople for redcards. If they aren't paying me a commission, I'll be damned if I'm going to hawk redcards so some spoiled 27 yr old STL making 4x or 5x what I am can get a larger bonus.
Ask me how much I care.
There are plenty of entry level jobs out there. I think there's more fun and less stress at McDonalds!
Why do I stay? Because I worked my ass off last year to get my avg hrs up so I can get my dental ins, life ins and vacation time back into effect which starts on April 1!

You would think with all the money Target saves with Red Cards they could add a $5 commission bonus to cashiers who sign them up instead of Hershey kisses. At my store we have to push service plans, pet prescriptions, and cartwheel as well. I was talking with the other cashiers and we were saying how almost no one has a check to get the debit card which is what most people want, so we should have a code on the red card pamphlet so if they sign up online we get credit, it would help us to meet our goals so much.

Cashiers don't get paid enough to psuh the red card as much as they do. Offering a commission of some sorts to cashiers that get red cards would help. Even a small percentage of the transaction tied to the red card signup would be nice.

It's getting to that point in my area that everyone that wants a red card has one and the ones that don't want one don't wanna hear us ask again. I'll push it but if I can tell they don't want it I don't ask. Oh well.

I have no problem pushing the REDcard. We all need to understand that cashiering isn't just about scanning & bagging anymore...you are a salesperson too. You sell anything that helps drives sales, whether that's the REDcard, or service plans/attachments, or positive guest surveys. It leaves a good impression if you try to at least fake your enthusiasm rather than coming off as though you're only asking because you'll get fired if you don't.

wow...that is sickening for ETLs to do that. but I do know a few ETLs who would do that.

They can not fire you for not getting Redcards... they CAN fire you however if you are not doing your job and asking every guest. I personally say if it is a large order lets say "now I am sure you are using your Redcard to save 5% right?" I find "goofy/silly" ways of asking too, It gets results and ETLs have noticed and have even encouraged asking in a "silly" way at my store at least.

ETLs at my store have us push red cards on 10 year olds buying a pack of gum.
What the fuck? That's one of the scenarios where we aren't supposed to push it. The minimum age for credit is 18 and it's 16 for the debit. Besides you'll just get this weird look from them.

They say Target just counts the amount of apps in the system. They don't care if they cant get one because of age

From my experience I started hated having to sell things when I worked at Best Buy. We had to sell magazines like what the hell does sport illustrated have to do with electronics!? The managers would get some kind of bonus if we sold a certain amount while we got absolutely nothing. I on occasion get pulled for a cashier shift even though I am mostly hardlines and I was never really trained to ask about red cards, I hate having to shove them in people's faces, and I don't have the confidence to pitch them because no one ever really even took the time to explain in detail about them except in training which was a long time ago. The idea of selling them makes me self conscious and when I do try I sound like an idiot because I don't even know what to really say so I stumble on my words.
