Can I fix a punch during the same shift?

I arrived to work at 5am this morning but my lead didn’t show up until 5:20. I was told by a coworker not to punch in and just do a punch correction later. So does that mean I don’t clock in or out at all for the day? So when do I do it? During the shift or not until tomorrow’s shift?

I would do all your other punches for today. Before you clock out for the day do a punch correction for your start work time.
