1st day of comp shop was a total fail at Wal-Mart...I haven't decided to stick with it because I was at Wal-Mart for 10 hours.. any advice from anyone, they kind of just threw me in that department??

I didn't get to finish the whole 8 hundred and something scans only about 400ish and no one told me til Thursday that I should do it over a week period

Looks like someone didn't do a training session with you.
Yes, you have a week to do your shop & you can break it down to 1-2 hrs increments so as not to look like you're taking up residence at Wally world. Just keep track of your hrs.
You won't find all 800+ items & that's OK. You're expected to avg about 75-80%.

I'd bitch-slap your trainer, tho....

Are they giving this TM money for gas to drive back and forth to Walmart several times a week?

We were told to do all items (before I left). But then again our pricing TL did nothing, had no idea how comp shop worked, and coached TMs for low scores without telling us how to fix it.

The last summer I worked at Target, I said screw comp shop and only found about half.

As backward as it seems, attempting 100% actually dings your score. There is an expectation that a good number of items won't be found/not carried/not an exact UPC match so 75-80% range was what I was told to aim for.
I would shop several areas for about 1-1 1/2 hrs. Just think of it as a scavenger hunt/video game: every item you can mark off drops off the list. If, after several visits, you're unable to locate certain items mark them as "not found/not carried". They'll come back on a future list. The main thing is to finish the list before week's end whether the items were marked "found" or not.
Dress comfortable/casual (no red & khaki) & wear comfortable shoes. I usually picked up a few items & had a drink with me.
Always stop by your store afterwards (depending on time of day) to download your current data. That way, should the system go down, you've got a partial list. Half a loaf is better than none.
It does get easier.

does comp shop ever take you more time than the hours they give you they gave me 5 for this week

Only 5?! For an 800 item list?!
We used to get 16 hrs/week but our data was also for a sister store a few mi away.
Over time they cut it down to 12 but 5?! Freakin' crazy.
I'd aim for 75% of your list, "not found" the rest & record your hrs. If they scream at you for going over, point out that you had NO training & NO idea of what to do.
As you get acquainted with the store layout & familiar with the shop lists, you should pick up speed but 5 hrs still sounds unrealistic.
Wish PricingMaster were here to weigh in.

does that count for just the store and to Wal-Mart or from home to the store to Wal-Mart???

I'd ask your TL. If you're getting mileage, it will probably be only the times on-premises.

I've never been paid for mileage but haven't asked for it, either. I've been doing comp shop for awhile now and here's what works for me:

On Saturday I get the PDA, log in and get the list. I keep the PDA with me most of the week so that if I want to drop by WM and do some of the shop, I'm prepared for that. I don't do it all at one time but spread it out over the week so that I'm not in WM for hours and hours. After each shop session, I upload what I've gotten so that if something goes wrong, there's at least a partial shop. I also leave the PDA on the charger for awhile after each upload so it's always well charged.

I have a weekly goal of 73% of the shop and have been green almost every week. Last week I was red and I think it's because there were two lists and I worked only the longer one. Apparently, both lists were to be completed but the only other time that happened to me I was told that in the case of multiple lists I'm to do just the longer one. If it happens again I'll try to find out just what to do as, like other things, it seems the rules change often and with no notice. ;)

Oh, I rarely use 'item not found' as that lowers the score. I just skip what I don't find.

I was told by the Comp Shopper at my store that she also uses 73% for her goal and that she's gotten red scores for going over that percentage. I'm not sure how that makes any sense whatsoever, but I'd try to stick to that exact percentage and see what happens.

hmmmm... i have to do comp shop for three stores. 800ish items per store.... i get 4 hours per store. doesnt seem reasonable to me.... i can nearly do it... but not sure how accurate and my brain melts bout halfway through the process.

The Comp Shop fell to the Pricing team after the girl who used to do it (she was a Cash Office Specialist) quit. But nobody ever told us how to do it. So my poor girls would go out (and btw we only ever get 8 hours) and do the entire list and we'd be red time and time again. Then we found out that doing "100% of the list is unproductive." 73% tends to be our goal, as well, and we're usually just squeaking by at green.

I've heard of other stores who print out the comp shop list, hand mark it, then input it into the Comp Shop PDA every week, but that seems unproductive and using additional payroll. But those two stores lead the group with their score every week.

Talk to your PATL or whoever is over PA (since all the TL mergers).

lol at my store they give them from 6am - noon to finish it no matter how big or small.. one day

I just got tossed into comp shop and was told that the goal was 70% and I have 10 hrs/week for it to do as I wish. Additionally I would be responsible for ad prep on Fri/Sat. So I would be scheduled for ad prep, and fill-in for the rest of my hours -10 for comp shop.

I thought that we had a comp shop TM at my store, but I also haven't seen the comp shop PDA off of the cradle in TSC in months.

I'd love to have 10 hours for CS. I get 6 and that's really not enough. :(
For some reason I think we comp shop for another store in addition to our own because we're higher volume but the other store is actually closer to the Walmart that we shop. That might have something to do with it.

I've been comp shopping for almost 3 yrs now. They used to give me 7 hrs to do it. When the pda updated and you could no longer see the previous price and just tap No Price Change it made it take longer to enter prices. I told my hr that it takes longer now. Now they give me 10 or so. Sometimes 11. Usually I need 11 to 12. I have never had anyone challenge me on the length of time it takes. If anyone wants to dispute it then I welcome them to come with me on a comp shop trip and see what it's all about. It's not all rainbows and unicorns.
Also, I don't think HRs take into account of those comp shop hours: drive time, parking time, uploading the shop and submitting the data. 7 hrs is a complete joke. If they want the store to be green in this area then they have to give you the hours it takes to get it done.
I haven't been claiming mileage (I used to) but I intend to start with gas now around 3.50 where I live.
I mysupported a question a while back about what % was needed in order to be green. I was told 75% so that's what I do. We are green every week. It's really a stupid system...why give you a list of xxx items and then tell you to only do 75% of it?
