In light of what happened in the Fontana store, knives should be greater controlled. At the very least, spider wrap ALL despite of the price. Knives are the easiest and most deadliest weapon to access, at least in my store.

Here is a link to what the OP is talking about: Man stabs self to death in Fontana Target

To add to the discussion, blister tags and locking peg hooks on the large knives and maybe tv on dvd cases for the small knives would slow them down, but the thing is, kitchen knives are at the mercy of flow team, usually shipped in repacks. Grey/black target stickers aside, how many flow members would even be aware to secure them with spider wrap let alone secure them at all? I should mention I am part of flow team but "moved up" to electronics flow almost 4 years ago. But even then, you still have sporting goods multi tools and stationery's scissors. Man, we are gonna need more small spider wrap :(

Edit: my thoughts are a mess, I just wanted to post the link XD

No way. I get the thought process, but if it's not knives, they'll jump in front of a vehicle, tie a bag around their head, etc. If you want to kill yourself, you'll find a way. If your fear is of someone using it against you or another guest, they can just as easily bring their own or worse, a gun. Knives are relatively cheap. They could purchase them, go in the bathroom, come back out. Hell, you can use a pen as a weapon if you wanted to. Then there are things like shovels and those heavy dumbbell weights.

As far as this particular case is concerned, this would just be putting a band-aid on a gun shot wound, anyway. Fix the problem. Psychiatric support is something society looks down on, and often, people won't attempt to reach out for help because of that. Mental health in America is in a very sad state, and we need to do more to get help for anyone who feels they need it.

Also, we should have a right to die. It's a murky subject, but it's your life should you choose to take it.

I wonder where the fm's were, when he was ripping open the package? Did they see anything, ask for cihyfs?
If anyone needs help with this matter, here is the life resources hotline 877-616-0510.

If law enforcement didn't tell them to close I am betting they were waiting for DTL approval.. Also if they told people to leave the theft they would be dealing with? And reshop? With if anything like my store, no hours to clean up the mess.. Not shocked at all..

FMs couldnt have stopped him. All boxed knives are fairly easy to open within seconds..

The employees acted heroically in this situation, and rushed in immediately to secure the area. Target should be very proud of them.

Im so very sorry for those who had to witness this horrific act by a desperate, sad man.

I can't even imagine.

Merch protection is to deter theft, not really to prevent guests from harming themselves. If it's not a knife set, it's something else. @DoWork is 100% right.

I understand the point of big business like Target is to make money, but if someone commits suicide in your store you should close right away out of respect even if there's no threat to guests and team members.

Be that as it may, Target is a retail company, a large one at that. The only way they will close is through direct orders from an officer or through DTL approval, unless your store is crushing sales left and right to create enough room to close for a certain amount of time, or if in a state of extreme emergencies, then Target will stay open, even if the Nukes start falling.

I personally think that blisterpaks or clamshell packages would be a good idea on large knives and some of the seasonal gardening equipment just to discourage them being used in unlawful or potentially harmful ways in the store. For example, DPCI 084-19-1231. They are literally claws just sitting around with nothing but small easily removable rubber tips on them. The last thing I need is someone grabbing one of these while I'm trying to make a PMR. But, overall, I've got to say I agree with @DoWork on this one for the most part, if it's not a knife in the store it'll be the car on the street. But to at least deter this kind of thing from happening in our stores, I do support some form of re-packaging.

Sad, but true.
There's a wide array of what a determined person could use if they were foiled in their first attempt.
And location was happenstance; if it wasn't Target, it would've been WalMart or someplace else.

First of all, my thoughts and prayers go out to the mans ( who killed himself) family. Lest, we forget someone lost their life...even if it was at his own hands. I also , feel bad for the team members at the store who witnessed it and have to live with that image the rest of their lives. Target should had closed. I realize that they can only do this through a DTL but the DTL should had closed it down. Yes, Spot is there to make money but things like this is just asking Karma to bite you in the ass. At the very least, they could had closed down for several hours. Lastly, like someone else has said if you are at the point you want to die...you will find a way to do it. The issue we ( as a country and human race) need to worry about it stopping it before it gets to that point.

The sad part is that this being done in public, and with a knife, it was probably an attempted cry for help., rather than a serious end it now suicide attempt.

Seriously unclassy for staying open though, there were most definitely Children in the store.

one of my POG TM's chimed up that he must have been their Signing Specialist....

This is one of those random events that happen .0000001% of the time compared to the population of the USA. So we remove all knives from every store because one person ,who is obviously not right in the head, decides to do something 99.9999% of the general population wouldn't do EVEEERR. (This is just a hypothetical statement) it was really a PR blunder to keep the store open for two hours, in my opinion. I think anyone can agree to that. If there weren't any knives available from the start, he could of just simply brought one in his pocket and did exactly what he did. He needed psychological help and his mental health was way way way way off

Fuck that this isn't England. This country has become pussy enough without having to lock up every single knife in the store. Besides, we don't have enough space on the pegs and time for all the wraps. The guy obviously wanted to off himself. He could have made chlorine gas instead and taken a few others with him but he didn't. It's sad that this guy didn't get the mental help he needed but it doesn't have to change the way things are done. It was an isolated incident.

While I think the store should have been shut down immediately, DTL approval or not, I don't think we need to start trying to lock everything down in the store. Target sells a lot of things that could be used to kill yourself or others. This was a very isolated incident.

quick some one get the dead guy to sign up for one its a free redcard and you dont even need to ask him about it
says the GSTL while she/he pulls out his ID and social security card out of his wallet to sign him up for the credit card.
