I think it's just a way of bring attention to the problem by focusing on on one place and using it an example.
People understand that the problem is systemic.
The trick is to get them to care.
^This. When people don't care, they can't empathize because it doesn't register in their cloistered little world. At the most, people exhibit faux empathy because it 'looks' like they care & it makes them feel better. Like the ones who see you working madly during a black Thurs/Fri & say things like "Oh, I think it's HORRIBLE how you people have to give up your day to work."
Well if you a$$holes wouldn't SHOP on that day, I COULD spend it with my family but you & I both know it ain't gonna happen.
