So, I'm slightly confused as to what has happened in my store.

I was only with Target for two months and they said they wanted to train me in Electronics and Cosmetics because I'm incredibly anal about how things need to be put back and super zone my entire zone every time I'm in it, AND get done before anyone else in my store when closing. (Hooray! Sorry for the kinda sorta bragging.)

So anyway, some stuff happened and I broke my foot. They still want to train me in electronics but I kinda 'missed' this particular round of training for it because I was out. Got back and I'm trained in cosmetics AND in-stocks for researching cosmetics, and they say they still want to train me in electronics because, since the woman who's really SUPPOSED to be in cosmetics is coming back soon and my hours in that department will be cut in half, I'll be awesome to fill in all the times electronics doesn't have anyone. Like one or twice a week.

So basically... I guess through all the confusion my questions are these...

They say they still want to train me in electronics, just are waiting for my training hours. It took two months from the time they mentioned it first to find a slot for me and I'm friggin upset that I got injured and missed it. Would they ACTUALLY still train me in it?

No one's been able to give me a clear answer as to whether being trained in in-stocks for research and cosmetics, and actually working those two things, is a promotion or not or makes me a specialist or something. It's also been so busy these past two weeks with tax-free weekend and back to school that I haven't been able to ask if I get a raise or not with these things either, or how much it is. So... huh?

Sorry for the long post guys, I'm sorta new at Target and here.

Thanks!

Sorry man but getting cross trained to another department only means that you might be able to pick up a few more hours, it doesn't mean a raise or even any recognition.

But, learning more work centers can lead to more hours & opps for you!!
Go for the chance. Upper mgt will notice you more. It can lead to bigger pay & more things. Take it & show them what you can do!

That's cool! Honestly I'm just thrilled to have more hours no matter what happens. There's 32 for cosmetics, and since I'm the only one there right now I get a minimum of 32 a week and have been doing 40 for the past three. :p 11 minutes of over time last week actually, management came in and said I was fired, then skipped off gleefully telling me they really didn't mind cuz they saw I worked so hard. God I love my HR.

Its not a promotion...you are only working in more work centers. I am surprised they are giving you training hours. Only Brand TMs (aka Specialists) get a small pay raise.

When I was moved from FA/Front to the salesfloor & electronics. They just threw me back there. Just told me just to zone & reshop like regular, read the Electronics training guide and paper on attachments, and that was it.

which is BS because working Electronics is 10 times harder than being a sales floor TM, and you actually have your own service score, attachment score, etc. So you have to be capable of making sales both directly and indirectly.

A common example would be:

Sales floor TM opening: We don't have any. It's always a TL. If a TM does open, they are caf pusher. Otherwise it's a hi-po tm that's covering a TL and taking care of their workload while they are away.

Electronics TM opening: LOD task list, Ad Audit, End cap audit, research ends, check signing, keep aisles near the boat superzoned, flex video game aisles to keep them full, answer calls, guest service, vendor delivery, help push remaining truck, instocks in electronics as necessary, salesplanners, deal with vendors.

Sales floor TM closing: Zone 1 or 2 departments, usually 40-80 aisles, run into maybe a couple dozen guest questions, light to medium foot traffic, department zone stays green fairly easily. Backup the front, you can go on break when scheduled because you don't need coverage.

Electronics TM closing: Finish tasks left by morning crew, follow up on LOD tasklist, Ad Audit, End cap audit, signing check, answer calls, guest service, pushing caf in all hardlines areas for the back half of the store, zoning ~120 aisles, 3-12 carts of reshop depending on season, dealing with hundreds of questions a night, 2+1 attach/esp with every item, dealing with all the lock up, a a dozen call buttons between multiple departments, try to find someone to cover your breaks and lunches when other tms treat electronics like the plague, rezone multiple times because large families come through and destroy everything, and last of all, finishing all that early so that you can help other TMs finish their zone.

The only positive is that working in electronics is a step up position at a few of the stores to TL. Anyone that wants to advance wants to work in electronics because you get broad experience compared to sales floor, which is a step up from cashier.

What vendors do you deal with as an Electronics TM? All your additional Entertainment materials are delivered DSD and received by someone else. Your Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft reps visit once every month or so. The trading cards guy?

You must be in a Super because there's no way that there are over a hundred aisles to be responsible for in a pFresh, even with Infant Hardlines, Toys, Electronics, Entertainment, Sporting/Luggage, and seasonal. In my store, the two or three closing Salesfloor TM's do a wave zone going through the entire store, including touching up Toys and Sporting goods.

While I think saying over 100 aisles is a bit deceiving, I wouldn't say its inaccurate. infant hardlines is probably 10-15 aisles (not sure, honestly).

But in my store, the core electronics zone is E and F. F probably has 65 or so "aisles''. The boat and everything around it is numbered differently, as are the locked up video games aisles, so there are more aisles there there what there should be intuitively. So that plus the 40 or so in toys (E), you're already at over 100. Ad infant hardlines....well, you get it. I think saying you have over 100 aisles to zone is pushing it though. I personally don't count the 4ft gondolas in electronics/entertainment as "aisles", but for POG reasons, they are.

It depends on the size of your store. I had to do zone toys, sporting goods, domestics & that is about 75 aisles. Push cafs to 8:30pm.
A former greatland changed into a p-fresh.
Mmb is 25 aisles.
Toys/electronics/luggage is 49 aisles
Seasonal/storage/domestics is 75 aisles
P-fresh/market/mini seasonal is 48 aisles
Chemicals/pets/cosmetics is 40 aisles
Hba is 17 aisles.
Frontend/cartwells are 3 aisles.

Microsoft, Sony (cameras and tvs) , Nintendo, Canon, Fujifilm, Ad reps for mobile phones (contract/prepaid), Target mobile related vendors, Nikon rarely, sometimes the odd food vendor or cleaning crew requesting things when the TL is out.

The departments I'm absolutely responsible for are: Electronics, Entertainment, Home Improvement, Auto, Outdoor patio/mini, Toys, Sporting goods, Trend runs in back of store. The ones I do at least once a week anymore due to call offs, laziness, etc are Infant Hardlines, Domestics, Market. Lately the ETLs are just letting the store go so my departments look great and everything else looks like crap, or the whole store looks like crap.

Physical aisles if you count left and right side together is 68 for my nightly departments, and over 100 for the others. On top of guest service, reshop, and whatever other projects get shoved on me.

I should also note, that it is not unusual at my store to have 4 electronics tms on the floor at peak time on the weekend. It's something special that our new hardlines etl managed to get into the schedule to at least help us do well when it counts the most. For a while we had 2 during the week

Just an FYI- if you find that you are working a higher paygrade workcenter (like, if you are a sales floor tm and you are also doing instocks and electronics which are both a higher paygrade) more than 50% of the time, you need to be making that rate.

If you typically more 5 days each week, and, over the next month or two, you find that you work (or cover) electronics more than 2.5 days each week, go to your HR and tell them that. Also note when you began working more in that workcenter, because you deserve retro-pay from that point.

tldr: If you cover lunches in another workcenter, sorry, you don't get paid more. If you work more than 50% of the time in another workcenter, you deserve to get paid for that.

I have to agree with everything Global said. You are responsible for everything mentioned AND must still finish early to help the SF team out.

However, Global you are one lucky person. 4 electronics TM's? Jesus, tell me what store your at cuz im requesting a transfer right now! :)

At my store, we do everything you mentioned with 1 TM, even on peak times/seasons. Also, half of the tasks arent done by the opening electronics TM, so the closer does the majority of it on top of theirs (because mid day peeps dont do anything at my store, ever.)

Indeed, everyone underestimates us Electronics TMs... 2+1 attachments/esps answering questions about cameras, tvs, docking stations, videos games and consoles... then we gotta zone books, dvds, mmb, electronics boat, video games, electronics and luggage and have to finish early to a) zone seasonal and b) help hardlines zone because of call outs...

All while having to work out Electronics CAFs

Bleh. And when we dont have anything to do we have to do reshop, flex video games and all front and back end caps...

BLEH!

It only means a raise or promotion if you are going to a department or position that's a higher pay grade
