For reference, I work at a small format store with only two real registers, two myCheckouts and five next-gen SCOs (not the NCR death machines). We also have three new myCheckouts, but we almost never use them because they almost never work and the most used bank card in my area does not work with the Zebra Pay app. Because of this, my store sees HEAVY SCO usage and lots of guests still pay with cash. Well, a month into the announcement of pennies no longer being minted, we ran out storewide and were told Spot wasn't going to send us any more. Additionally, two TLs told me they were told there are no plans to update the SCOs to work without pennies, because without pennies, they freak out and can't take cash.
Our only option now is to have dividers and attempt to have two separate lines. One line is for cash, cash-back transactions and returns, while the other is for everything else. Unfortunately, the checkout area at my store is SO microscopic that as soon as there are, say, five people in line to use the two real registers, it becomes a congested mess. Add that with guests trying to get their order pickups and Shipt shoppers bagging their stuff at a table merely two or three feet away from the registers makes an already bad situation even worse.
This is just yet another example of how short-sighted the decision was and how it has been brutal for small-format stores. I sincerely doubt Target is going to redesign the checkout area, but that's what may have to happen to get an efficient layout again. I'm willing to post pictures of the setup too because it was goofy even before this whole cash only line idea started.
But what do y'all think? I'm curious how this affected anybody else, if at all. And for those on here also at small-format stores, please tell me everything LOL
