The loss of pennies has absolutely crippled my store

For reference, I work at a small format store with only two real registers, two myCheckouts and five next-gen SCOs (not the NCR death machines). We also have three new myCheckouts, but we almost never use them because they almost never work and the most used bank card in my area does not work with the Zebra Pay app. Because of this, my store sees HEAVY SCO usage and lots of guests still pay with cash. Well, a month into the announcement of pennies no longer being minted, we ran out storewide and were told Spot wasn't going to send us any more. Additionally, two TLs told me they were told there are no plans to update the SCOs to work without pennies, because without pennies, they freak out and can't take cash.

Our only option now is to have dividers and attempt to have two separate lines. One line is for cash, cash-back transactions and returns, while the other is for everything else. Unfortunately, the checkout area at my store is SO microscopic that as soon as there are, say, five people in line to use the two real registers, it becomes a congested mess. Add that with guests trying to get their order pickups and Shipt shoppers bagging their stuff at a table merely two or three feet away from the registers makes an already bad situation even worse.

This is just yet another example of how short-sighted the decision was and how it has been brutal for small-format stores. I sincerely doubt Target is going to redesign the checkout area, but that's what may have to happen to get an efficient layout again. I'm willing to post pictures of the setup too because it was goofy even before this whole cash only line idea started.

But what do y'all think? I'm curious how this affected anybody else, if at all. And for those on here also at small-format stores, please tell me everything LOL

Unfortunate fallout, but not Target's fault at all. Hopefully they'll get an update to the software to round up/down when there would be a penny involved.
I actually support ending the penny. Good move but should've been announced way, way ahead of time to give companies time to adjust policies beforehand.

According to leadership there are no plans to update the SCOs at any point based on what they've been told. I also support ending the penny but I think the fact Target is just done sending our store pennies is an extremely shortsighted decision. Either they need to start sending them again or the registers MUST be updated (even though they've said there are no plans to do so)

I don't get how pennies no longer being minted even matters. It's not like most coins you ever saw were from the current year anyway.
I agree, but that's the justification Spot has given our store for why they won't send us pennies anymore. It's extremely stupid

It is likely not Target making the decision to not send pennies anymore, but something happening with the bank/carrier. I have family members who work in grocery stores near me and they aren't getting any pennies delivered either. It isn't coming from the company, but the financial institutions.

It's not target. The federal reserve literally does not have pennies, at least not the Chicago branch. It's wild they finalized the decision with such literal warning. Like almost every pos system is going to need to be updated to round to the .05.

Is it possible for an ETL to get a bunch of rolls of pennies from a local bank? Not sure if they have a supply anymore either.
I'll have to ask if any of my TLs or the SD have tried that yet. The closing TL brought several rolls of pennies right when the announcement was made but those all were given out by the SCOs pretty quickly. Seems like an uphill battle at this point
