Accommodations Request - Hour Reduction

Hello,

So I have a question. I am nervous asking but oh well…

First, is there a specific form that has mental health stuff listed? Because the form I got when I worked for Target years ago didn’t have anything for mental health. Only physical health.

I have a disability (Autism & Schizoaffective Disorder are a few) and I need to have a schedule that works for my mental health.

As well as does not have so many hours where I end up losing benefits (this is not the whole reason, but it is a part of things). I need them basically.

Because if I don’t have the medication I need, I will not be able to work at all. I also receive services for my disability.

What would be the best way to approach this?

ChatGPT says I should ask informally at first and then if that does not work I should make a formal HR request.

If that does not work I could try closing off my availability I guess.

I did ask informally years ago and things were going fine, but when the holidays came up I started getting more hours.

I am anticipating hours will drop in January, so hopefully this is not a huge problem.

I like my job at Target and would like to keep it.

Note (Important): I do have Open Availability from 12am to 12am. Basically I was told to do that from a Disability Job Program I went to. So that could be a reason I am getting more hours now. I get that it is the Holdiay’s and I DO want to help. Right now I can (it’s complicated but I can explain via PM if someone wants). But regularly it would become an issue.

It sounds like what you need isn’t just an informal conversation — you need a formal ADA accommodation on file. Target absolutely does accept mental-health-related accommodations (Autism, schizoaffective disorder, etc.). Mental health is covered the same way as physical health under ADA, even if the form you saw years ago didn’t mention it
The best thing to do is talk to your HR and tell them you need to start an ADA accommodation request for a specific schedule and limited hours due to your disability. They will either give you the forms or connect you with Target’s Leave & Disability team, and your doctor will fill out the part that explains your restrictions.
Once the accommodation is approved, your schedule has to follow it — even during holidays. Open availability is not required when you have an ADA accommodation on file, so don’t worry about being penalized for that.
Asking informally is fine, but it won’t hold up when schedules get busy. A formal ADA request gives you protection, documentation, and consistency. It also helps the store plan your schedule correctly.
You’re doing the right thing by wanting to keep your job — the accommodation is there so you can keep it without hurting your health or losing your benefits.

Thanks, I was worried about getting flak for being concerned about my benefits.

Basically the fact is that I know there is a good chance that Target would not schedule me enough so that I would get Health Insurance.

And Private Health Insurance would be expensive for someone with my mental health and medical needs as well.

As well as the mental health aspect of not being able to work too much.

I am assuming I would not be able to pick up extra shifts tho if there is a maximum amount of hours I am able to work in a week. Some weeks I feel better than others so I will do that.
