And? I've got over two years at Target, another year with specialty retail, and a great financial background. Do I care if my entry level position wages are the same as an 18 year old who started 3 weeks ago and Target is their first job? No. After all, raising the starting wage for that person didn't cause them to lower my wage. It's not like my job duties are any different than the 18 year old's, I'm simply faster at it.

If I were in an industry where the position isn't entry level or if additional experience led to additional duties, then yeah, I would expect to make more, and negotiating for more would be expected on both sides. But folding clothes and pushing z's is not that situation.

That is exactly the issue. The team members who have been there and making the same way are being held to a different standard. For the same wage they are expected to be better than new hires. They are expected to not only fold the clothes but set the merchandise, do price changes, flex into other areas for the same wage as new hires. Nope not fair at all.

I will say this. I make less than 15. If when we all get bumped to 15, I'm not making a decent amount above that, and have enough hours, I might take that opportunity to explore other employment options. I can always come back at $15 if it doesn't work out.

I would love to know the name of the area where retail non-management workers start at more than $12 and have done so for 5 years. Certainly ain't here, most retail around here offer less than $10.
Costco or wegmans, depending on dept.

Exactly! I had taken a 2 year break from Spot. I was kind of bummed that I was going to make less than my Spot friends who stayed on during that time. But then all of the wage increases kicked in. I'm making almost $3 more per hour than when I left. Same as everyone else. So for me, all is good.

The important thing to do is: Leave On Good Terms. Make sure you are rehirable!

$12 an hour five years ago? You had some nice beefy retail jobs! I’ve been workin at target for TEN YEARS now as an electronics specialist (before they got rid of the specialist thing) and I make $12.30/hr 🙄 I make 30 cents more than someone they’ll hire off the street. When I started working my minimum wage was $7.45. Now that’s some hard shit to justify. Target doesn’t seem to care that much about experience and reliability.

I know a dude who started at Safeway (union) in the late 70's back when they were still in this market. He was making $8 an hour by 1983, and that was just as a regular employee, not management. That's $20 adjusted for inflation, by the way. Imagine being able to afford a house and a car on shelf-stocker wages.
