Get comfortable with cashiering first.
Learn other areas up front: carts, guest service desk, etc.
Whenever it's slow up front ask if you can help on the salesfloor.
Softlines always needs help folding tables & hanging go-backs; hardlines always needs help with go-backs.
Putting away go-backs (aka stray, abandons) helps you learn where things go in the store.
The more you help in other areas, you become global (able to work in any area).
Whenever anyone asks if you know how to do something (& you don't), say "No, but I've always wanted to learn!"
Then you'll be off & running.
