So I was closing in Tech the other day when one of our usual closers came up to me and was mad that Electronics Team Members get paid more...
So I said uh no we don't...somehow they thought that because you work Electronics you get more per hour. I went on with them for a solid 5 mins about how we DO NOT get paid any more than other Team Members yet they still didn't believe me.

Has anyone else heard this same rumor that if you work Tech you get more per hour? I need to know...

That used to be a thing. They got a whopping 50cents an hour more. It hasn't been a thing for over two years now.

Man those Tech repacks are really hard to open, and man these clothes are hard as hell to fold, and cleaning up lipstick on the aisle is super hard.

Before the days of having a VM, the signing specialist also got paid more. And those were the days of incredibly complicated overheads to hang all over the store. Believe me, that extra pay was completely warranted for doing that (especially for Christmas!!).

Sounds before my time.

Back then specialty and gm were not a thing. Electronics got more because they were expected to do more then the average hardlines tm and be specialists. Backroom tms got more because they were equipment certified. Now all tms are supposed to be able to do everything amd be specialists of there own areas.

I REALLY hope your italics are meant to signify sarcasm because I guarantee you in a properly run store, specialty is running their asses off.
Im not saying that specialty isnt a lot of work but in my store they are not getting the volume that we are getting in gm. Whats made it difficult in my store is that style has had to cover help with back up and sfs. Weve consistantly got more domestics and housewares repacks then any zone in style granted there is a lot more eaches in style repacks. Atleast in my store style has not been short on hours either.

Edit to add: I want to add im not trying to down play my specialty team many of them have been very good and probably the most consistent group in my store. We have done huge number in sfs for our size store and they are the reason it has been possible.

Standing behind your team and backing them up, I love it!

It was sarcasm yes, I work in Specialty Sales so trust me I know...I was being sarcastic as to what some others may think Specialty Sales is.

I don't know I still kinda agree that electronics TM should get something more. For all the BS of Q4 and cashiering, 141s, Price Change and how much they overwork us. I got into an argument with management the other day because they want us to do pets and baby go-backs and zone.

The thing is we're a SUPER busy store like I believe we make over 100 mill a year an old TM told me that but I don't know how true it is. Not even that but usually we have a marketsource person who just does the general guest help stuff like unlocking a game but we don't even have that.

My lead told me that the zone needs to be better in electronics and I said we can't run 4 departments and cashier. Do I just sound spoiled right now?

They always want you to zone first and have the "Zone" or brand at the top of the priority list. But sometimes there is other work that needs to be done and we can't spend the day zoning.

Unlike all of the other tms in the store who do those same things for their departments, back up and support the other departments. When I first moved to electronics, I thought I had so much more to know and do than those in other departments. Then I moved to a gm area and realized that I had to learn about every gm area because a guest doesn't distinguish that a tm works in pets when they need help in toys or hardware or beauty or domestics. I had to know about the popular toys, the differences between types of vacuums and lightbulbs, the content of cosmetics and which were hypoallergenic and why, types of fabrics and their qualities. There are challenges and BS in every area and every tm brings value to what they do. Zoning and doing gobacks is not running a department. That 100m doesn't generate from electronics alone. Yes, you sound spoiled.

Years ago this was the case. Before modernization.

Yes, you do. Every TM on the sales floor is having to deal with Q4, cashiering, 141s, price changes, and zoning. They also have to do OPUs. They also help in several different departments.

Wah! Wah! Wah!

You know what I had to do today? Well, it was a non-truck day, so there was hardly anyone on the grid on the floor at all. My ETL left me directions to set salesplans. She wanted me to start with holiday ones on the racetrack. OK. Whoops! Problem! I'm the only person on the salesfloor scheduled to work in A or B block for the entire day. Right at the front of the store. You ever try to set a freaking Christmas focal at the front of the store when no one else is anywhere near the area? It's fucking guest central. You can't accomplish shit.

But, oh wait. Tomorrow we have a double and domestics has shit on five thousand vehicles. So, I had to stop setting and clear their vehicles. Joy to the motherfucking world.

To top that off, all of our closers called in, so I had to stop pushing domestics and pull 1 for 1s to meet metrics. (Seriously, every single closer called in.)

So, what's going to happen tomorrow? Well, I'll have a double truck waiting for me and have to explain to my ETL why I only managed to set 4 salesplans in an 8 hour shift. Fun times.

Please tell me again how tech has it so hard because you have to do pets and baby returns and zone. Are you fucking serious with that shit?

The only speciality tms I know of are the ones that do hearth and hand...
and while I don't push hearth and hand, I know it's a pain in the ass to deal with all the styrofoam, metal wires, plastic wrappings... on top of whatever cardboard I have in home decor...

TBF tech plus mobile jobs should have been paid more considering the "commission" from our sales dropped into the stores daily sales. I recall seeing 800$ Verizon commissions.

its a shit show in every department right now. im in tech. used to be a dollar extra for key holder then they changed it to 50 cents now its no extra but we still have the responsibility of key holder and get paid like everyone else and have to be dbo/push/salesplanner/rfid/one for ones/mirs/price change push the truck and secure every item thats over 40 bucks or whatever. spiderwrapping takes time and i still have tms that come to me to help them for that. books omg with the books and find room for the damn tvs. returns/zone/ strays/ defectives kinda hard to do with 50 guests in your face every second asking for xbox ps5 and pokemon cards or help with other departments because no one is scheduled or called out. guests still want a full on explanation between the difference of a roku and firestick the difference between the models why is this one more expensive etc..the difference between the chromebook and the windows laptops etc. should i get my kid a switch or a lite and whats the difference. i usually get good reviews but guests are starting to notice I am rushing them because in have so much work to get done and thats not good either. signed on to this job at first as a saleperson zoning and returns. now if i dont do my required daily task they have "conversations" with me. And omg the fuckin new iphone came out so we gotta have keepers and we dont even have all the cases and screen protectors out because the work just keeps piling up and too many chiefs not enough indians...and they are all happy because they hired some seasonal workers.but you all know how that goes..very rarely a few are actually helpful. its just a shit show all around imho
