My counterpart is quick to complain about me. He went to HR and our ETL with vague complaints. When confronted, he cannot give specifics, he is making un warranted accusations, and he said that nothing I can do can make it better. My ETL told ME to work onMY communication. I am at a loss as to what to do...

Try to schedule a metting with your counterpart and stl or etl-hr with your etl. Just to clear the air between you and him or her. It's what i did with my ptl and myself when i became the signing specialist. Now we get along great and we communicate much bettet than before.

Don't take it personally, if the ETL hadn't "talked to" you about anything, the other TL would have freaked out and escalated the issue. The ETL probably didn't see anything wrong with what you were doing or else s/he would have said something specific.

I am experiencing a similar situation. I am a newly promoted TL. I knew people would have negative things to say, but I didn't realize it would be so bad. Any suggestions from others who have experienced this? My counterpart was not pleased with the decision to promote me, though when I ask for feedback - I get very little, if any. On top of that, one of the LOD's told me to my face that they did not support my promotion and several TMs are talking about me and/or saying false things behind my back to my counterpart.

Why do you think people would be saying negative things about your promotion? Do you think they feel you aren't qualified or because you got the promotion because you were on the 'good side' of the etl.

Ack. It shocks me how much the mentality of TM's seems to vary store to store. Here people promoted is usually well received, it's only the new hires that get flack because our TM's prefer to see promotions from within typically.

The only understandable thing is that I am fairly new to the store. I think they aren't taking into account that I have been with Target for a few years, or they don't know. The two leaders referenced in my post do not think I'm qualified. I have only known the ETL - GE for the time that I've been there so I don't know about being on his/her good side. I just do my job. I'm bummed that I don't have a more supportive team and am wondering how to move past it to settle into my new role. I want everyone to feel comfortable giving me feedback and bringing any concerns to me. I also want the other leaders to feel confident. My ETL-GE, STL, and ETL-HR are supportive and asked me to move up. Can the others really not trust them?

Canibedreamin, just keep doing your job. Be kind to the cashiers, kind to the guests, keep the front end moving smoothly and things should be fine. Oh and above all, get those redcards on your shift.
People at target are very fickle and they can go from hate to love and vice versa in the blink of an eye. Do your job, don't get involved in the nitty gritty politics and it should all be ok.

Our store is interviewing for a new gstl and everyone in the front end is hoping that one person won't get it..because she is not qualified, even though she thinks she is because she has been there for a long time..but we don't feel she is qualified because she does not know how to listen. She is a gossiper, she is extremely disorganized and she plays favoritism.. All those negative traits would make her a disaster in the position. Worst of all, she doesn't understand she is like that even though she has been told by different tl's and etl's many times.
Sadly she is probably going to get the position by default.

I suppose it seems weird to me since you have been a GSA for 2 years? Before promotion to GSTL I mean? I could see some cashiers being made GSTL causing a fuss at our store, in fact I am only confident that there's two that could become GSTL without the rest of the team causing a fuss (and I'm not one of them), but I am confident that if either of our two primary GSA's were made GSTL that the entire team would support the move up.

When I moved into the GSA role, I was very surprised that some people...some who are considered some of the sweetest people in the store...somehow felt they now had license to be rude to me. Even a small promotion can bring out people's nastiness. And that was hard. I can handle the guests, but I was not expecting it from the TMs. But I found that as I've gone through this position longer, the more people that rotate out, the less that happens...and those who have been here since before I started began to settle down.

Is this person a GSA currently?

I am having a difficult time not letting it get to me, but I know what you mean. Waiting this out is going to be HARD.

How long had you worked at the store before becoming GSA?

I had the opposite experience so far at my store, but not sure if others might respond if/when I am made GSA.

Opposite response in the sense that I had a few people tell me they thought I should have went for the GSA position when they heard a new one was hired, and then when told that I did they quickly change their expression to one of sympathy. I've also had three of the GSA's we have (every one but the new one basically) say they think I'd be good at it, and had them show me how to do the few things I hadn't ever done before (closing the registers, banking them in the morning, scanning the CRC/Salvage pallets and selecting the batch, etc.) after they found out I was interested. But at the same time, some of the cashiers that don't know I applied might have responded very differently than what I've experienced thus far.

I'd imagine how long someone is a cashier at the store before becoming a GSA has more to do with how accepted they are afterwards than how capable they are of doing the position though.

Not quite. Cashier for a year and a half, GSA for a year and a half - learning bits and pieces of other depts and the entire front end (except SB, Optical, Clinic) throughout. Different stores. Haven't been at this location very long. I know that has alot to do with it.

Oh, yes. It got to me. I couldn't believe that a cashier felt she could be rude to me because she had to wait for me to finish up something at guest services to get her her change. It really opened my eyes to some people's real personalities.

I'd have told them if it was that big of a rush they could/should have switched registers.

I'm not sure they'd have liked that response, but it's true. Ran out of singles, register next to you is open and the GS(A/TL) is busy or not available for some reason? Move.

I don't expect most cashiers to do what I've done before, (grab a $20 bill from my register, walk over to another register take out 20 singles and put the $20 in it in its place and take the singles to the register I was on) but simply moving to another lane is not difficult.

Nor is switching the denominations between registers, but that I can see making some people freaked out for AP-related reasons, but my logic is if my hands are clearly visible to the cameras and both registers have the right amount of cash at the end of the night no harm done.

Yikes!

I was a cashier for three months, then did guest service/cashiering for another five months. Even going to guest services was hard because the girls over there did not like anyone coming into "their" territory. When a couple of them went on to other jobs, that helped...but even going to guest services was rough until then. The ETL-GE at the time had been eyeing me for GSA since the minute he interviewed me, but we had to wait for another promotion to go through, first.

We frown on the cashiers doing that at my store, but when there's no other choice, it has happened.

And while I have asked cashiers to move to other lanes if they have run out of something and I can't get to them because I have other fires burning, 75% of our cashiers would throw a fit if they had to move from the lane they had planted themselves on that day. They get very possessive of their registers after they pick one.

That might be part of it. I might not get full support from every cashier, but I think I'd get more support from the team now than ~10 months ago.

I actually wonder, we're org'ed for two GSTL's, is there a specific time of year that they're most likely to hire the missing GSTL? Wondering if we are likely to have a wonderful externally-hired GSTL before the holidays alongside the seasonal hires, or if most stores would leave such promotions/hiring till after the holidays?

Last year we hired a gstl and GSA during the holidays. Both new to target. One left in the spring the other is still there, still not properly trained. I was training them as well as cashiers during the height of the holiday season - disastrous...
