Ok so as a lot of you know, I'm Flow TM. I work from 4am-8am (4am-9am on food trucks days whichs MFS). I work 6 days a week with a total of 28 hours. However, this week I had 40 hours but that's because they wanted me to help with BTS.

I think ever since I talked to my ETL about really considering leaving Flow to work other deparment and also after opening my availability he's been giving me more hours , but I would like to reach 40 hours. A lot of people said that it is very inconvenient for them to lose people (leave flow) so that's why he gave me more time to work. Some flow people start later and leave very early, I was one of them before. Most people say that those people are the ones he doesn't like. And finally about BTS only very few selected people stayed to lunch to help BTS ,me included. Yesterday my TL had me working BTS alone and while she sent a lot of people home.

Now after BTS is gone what can I do? I mean there's gotta be ways to work more in order to reach 40 hours. I've wanted to try the swap board, but every time I go there all the shifts are picked up an that's because people that work in the afternoon get them before I do. I can't since I'm only in the morning , and well I will require cashering training if I wanted to pick those.

I want to learn to do a lot of things in this store, that includes getting trained in other departments.

I've overheard once someone saying that peoole could get more hours if they worked Flow first half of the Morning then the other half backroom to backstock everything , is this possible?

Please help me how can I let my ETL know. How do I approach this?

Talk to your ETL and say that you are interested in being cross-trained in different areas, as you'd like to be able to pick up shifts in other work centers and work more hours. Talk to both your ETL (Logistics), and the ETL-HR.

You're never going to be automatically scheduled 40 hours a week as a regular Flow TM, but as you've discovered, there are ways to get more hours. Being flexible with your own schedule and willing and able to work in other areas of the store is huge.

Tell them you want to be a CA.
ETLCA in Training!?

But anyways, pair up with your ETL and they should be more than willing to cross train in a different area. (Backroom, softlines, BTS if your store designates a BTS/"Seasonal Specialist"..)

Keep in mind that depending on how they sort payroll at your store (Sound like an ULV, but never assume.. :p ) 40 hours wont always be an option, in our district we just got a new DTL, and Payroll is one of his "core rolls". But EVERY Target is different. (6am v. O/N, etc)

Become a TL and get atleast 32, but almost always 40 hours every week.

Oh yea and some more headaches.

First, take everything that people tell you with a grain of salt. All stores aren't the same but we have sometimes upwards of 3 people working on the schedule with no communication between them. Those people leaving early aren't necessarily "ones he doesn't like". The hours just get plugged in with people and those with more defined roles on flow (at my store softlines and food truck) get more consistent schedules than other people. Either way, yes you can hop to the backroom after your flow shift IF they need help. Those hours still have to come from somewhere. 4th quarter is always a time when that scenario could be more probable. I used to do that and fill in with instocks shifts when I needed the money more. Now, though, I volunteer to leave early if they need it because I don't need to work my butt off anymore to make ends meet. Usually being upfront with your TL/ETL or even HR/STL shows initiative and will get you what you want.

Asked to be cross-trained, then pick up shifts.
When my first store started cutting cashier hours, I would volunteer to help fitting room put out their reshop whenever we were slow. After a couple of weeks helping them, I picked up enough knowledge to where the softlines TL would ask me if I could cover shifts.

Going to flow Backroom is the best way to get 40. They work 8 hours on every truck day

Yes apparently this could be the only possibly way. I was just told by another TM who's been long than me and she says that this what my ETL gives them Flow-Backroom just so they get their 40 hours or so, but it's just that most people don't like it becuase Backroom is hard. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I would have to talk to my ETL.

Flip through the posted schedule and find people who are getting lots of hours. If any of them have flow shifts listed, look and see what else they do for hours.

That will give you some ideas of what you can try for.

Backroom isn't hard per-say, just more involved than what a lot of people do on flow. You're more accountable (or should be) and they track your metrics using your login on the devices (or at least they used to). But, again, 4th quarter is hell on the entire store. If you can manage flow-backroom shifts now, they will know you can handle a lot more when times are slow. Even if they can't fulfill your request now let them know you will do whatever it takes to get some hours. Good luck by the way!

Ok people I asked for it and then I got it! I'm Flow-Backroom, also my ETL wants to give me training for In Stocks, so after talking to my TL and ETL about wanting to be more involved with learning other positions and everything I could from the store including other departments some days later, I was told I was going to start being trained for Backroom which I'm currently on that. I've been working 8 hours every day also. So yeah, you guyrs are righte, definitely the smartest way to add more hours is working other departments in the store.
