So we have a new sl Tl starting tonight! Guess whose training him! I'm really excited but I want to give him a practical outlook of working at target and what he can expect. But no scare him away. I know nothing about him but that he's a real boy and taking over men's and boy's. So what would you have wanted to know before starting?

Become good friends to the TMs that set your POGs, adjacencies, do research, and can do AD prep. Basically the TMs that know how to do your job that you can fall back on when you get overwhelmed. And you will get overwhelmed.

^^This most definitely! And that there is no such thing as a typical day, there are so many variables that can and will change whatever you plan. The other things I learned quickly... be flexible, think fast and keep a sense of humor

I wish I would have know that Corporate America is the downfall of America at Target, just as it in every other corporation in america, meaning, without unionization, people at the bottom have no rights and no protections.

the one thing i wish i would have known was that your expected to stay until the job is done.. you walk in at your scheduled time but u never really know when your getting out of there.... lol.. flexibility is key...

Ahhh, the double lunch days. Haven't had too many of those lately, but 4Q? Oh yes.

Also, OP, make sure he gets some cross-training around the store. Electronics, market, ad prep, guest service, backroom... really the only place you shouldn't make sure he gets hands on with is Food Ave. It annoyed the bejesus out of me that I had so little cross-training and was useless outside of my little world (at least until I got myself cross-trained).

Introduce him to the outliers, the signing specialist (or TM, whatever), AP, and the SFT.
Explain how these are the people who can make his job so much easier.

Thanks guys :) honestly Im really excited to meet him tonight I can't wait to teach him everything I think it will be fun.
The SL team at my store sets all our own presentation work so that's what me and him will be doing his first week.
I would have never thought of cross training him but makes sense I'll prolly show him everything I know of the different sections in the store now :)

just wish I knew how I'd feel about it, I had other interviews before I started and had leads on jobs during the time I worked there. Oh well my stores been doing a lot better and I am much more satisfied with my job there now.

Keep the learning loop in mind and be specific about the WHAT and WHY (prioritize why) when your training him. Also be upfront with him about being able to ask you any question at any time, even after your finished with the initial learning plan.

As far as cross-training, see if he can be trained as a GSTL so he can cover breaks at the front end.

That is no fun! NCNS? I'll totally take his spot! hahahah.

i would have you in a heartbeat five! come to the carpet we're way cooler :)
and yep ncns we called him he never called back and the lod's were like maybe got the wrong schedule...whatever
