So I guess we arent meeting Payroll or whatever and they are cutting the Cart Attendants shifts (Shifts in general). I am in no way complaining about this. Usually CA comes in at 10-4 to close or 4-10 . So now with the cutting of shifts we come in at like 12-4 open ,6 to 10 close. Ok I understand this so I come in at 530 *Im an early bird* and the parking lots a disaster .We have also only got like 15 carts left in the cart well. I find out that the opening cart attendant is staying till close, and a whole bunch of people are training in other areas?Im all for advancement in the company but How do they have the hours to do this stuff and I have to come in to this disaster? If they are gonna let people stay they might as well let us come in at our regular times so that Guest wont be complaining because these are safety issues. Being that I want a TPS position I wanted to bring it up with out ETL-AP but I never see her since...I come in like 3 days a week...

Carts attendants will ALWAYS be the first to cut when payroll is light. Anyone can get carts...just saying. If your store is letting people stay later they may be covering call outs from other team members. If not, then you're right - their logic is flawed because they're not saving payroll at all if they just add hours after the schedule.

It's not just you. My entire team was asked to cut payroll (of course, certain positions couldn't give up hours including GSA and PA) so my cart attendant volunteered up a few hours. He worked 9-1 yesterday, with the closer doing a 630-1030 shift. Cool,, well what about that 5 hour gap in the middle of the afternoon?

*rant to ETLs*
Guess what, I'm going to pull one of my 3 cafe team members to go do it. If you're going to stack up on cafe hours but then ask to cut cart attendant, I have no choice but to move people around. It's either that, or you can go outside and get some carts!

Argh.

Having a Cart Attendant must be nice, we never have one. We even had a $110,00 day over by almost 15k and had no cart attendant, oh and three cashiers. We ran out of carts with nobody on the sales floor. I said "Carts or (bigger) lines, your choice." I just laugh it off now, the number one thing I get when I tell somebody I work at Target is "Why don't you have more people available, If Target want's this image, then I won't stand in the way. There is only so much I can do as a "supervisor" that just spends all his time as a cashier.

At 2pm, I had 4 lines open. I took 10 or less at the photo lab. Guest complained that there were no express lines open. My response? Sorry for the inconvenience, but you should buy some more things. More sales leads to more payroll. When we miss sales or go over payroll, it just leads to less payroll afterwards.

Today, we noticed at around noon that we were making payroll by almost like 250 hours! I looked at my STL and said it's Friday and we are NOW JUST REALIZING this! WE could have added so many more people during the week..... My STL didn't talk to me the rest of the day. LOL

After I was done at FA, I stayed to cashier a few hrs because of call-outs. They have all these teeny little shifts that cashiers don't come in for so I've been picking up hrs like quarters on the floor of an arcade.

The way the company acts by cutting payroll hours is pretty much a scam. The store I worked in continually made more money every year and yet like every other store was cutting away positions. Now, if there is positive sales growth and the company was making money previously, then why all the sudden are these positions being cut? Target is making more money than they want people on the store level to realize. Also, if you ever go to a grocery store to shop, they almost always have a buttload of employees working (probably the same amount or greater than what you would see in a Super Target) and a grocery store typically has much smaller margins (they make less money).

We overspent this month by 700 hours...100 percent in Logistics. Whoopsies....

I hate the everyone can just get carts thing. I bet all my ETLs couldn't handle a cart attendant shift at my store without losing their mind or getting grey hairs and they act like they know my job inside and out and try to tell me whats the best ways of doing things. Sure anyone CAN get carts, but WILL ANYONE get carts, clean restrooms, run back and forth with carryouts, spills, one plus one, cover breaks, then since they are doing all that, get yelled at for being low on carts. And keep in mind cart attendants are outside when its burning hot and when its freezing cold and raining.

If your store runs properly then the CA position isnt as difficult, but if your store is run like ****, then the CA job can be the hardest since they are actually doing MANUAL WORK instead of pushing buttons or writing on a piece of paper.

I've said this before but in my early days of training for signing the specialist training me told me that if an ETL ever told me I need to do my job faster I should ask them ever so nicely to demonstrate how I should go about because I really, really want to learn how to do it from someone who knows better.
I promise it works if you handle it without too much sarcasm.

I used that idea to ask a team leader to show me how to get 4 tasks she had assigned me to complete at the same time - she was speechless. I was pleased. (mean, I'm so mean)

i used this on my etl who told me as the only person on the sales floor i should be setting 6 sales planners per hour--even in market. we ended up betting he couldnt do it either. he naturally picked plastics to demonstrate in. in the next hour, i set four sg sp, and he did five plastics. killed him when i told him he wasn't done because he didnt put up the new backer or shoot his signs and backstock :D

Our cart attendant gets carts. That's all our cart attendant does. We don't have one for more than 1/2 of the shifts. Sometimes they are missed, mostly they are not unless they have that sparkling personality thing going. GSTL/GSA clean restrooms, salesfloor and special teams take care of spills, breaks are covered by fellow tms, and the CA isn't yelled at for no carts - the flow team is because they never bring them back to the front after they are finished pushing the breakout. I feel sorry on the freezing cold/rain/snow days - especially snow that has been plowed, but another tm will generally help on those days. It's obviously different at your store, but if it's too hard, work in another area. As far as the manual work thing - do you really have a clue what anyone else on the salesfloor/backroom/flow teams do all day? You might want to take a look and then rethink that statement.

Can I work at your store?

Also me personally I would never speak on another work area I havent done unless it something obviously saw that person is doing... like say.. NOTHING.

the longest we've had a scheduling gap between cart attendants was 15 minutes during the weekday lol.

2 hours without a CA would be a disaster

Amen! There are only 2 TL's in my store that I respect when they claim they know what they are talking about or tell me it "could" be done faster. Because I have seen them do it faster! (certain things) On the other hand, none of the other TLs at my store really get into your business about things like that. Last week I showed to ETL's how to check for "how many" fit out on a shelf according to HQ on the PDA. WHY do they NOT know this?

With the way our guests are, even a cart attendant's 15-min break is a disaster at my store.

Wow I want to work at your store now. Just going on my break with no other CA to cover can be a disaster.

I'm just saying, I've never seen any backroom TMs break a sweat and if you look at CAs at my store, were sweating. Your backroom TMs might just work harder then mines, but at MY STORE, CAs are the only ones actually doing work. Salesfloor TMs just casually walk around zoning, and putting things on shelves.

I've been talking to many ETL's and these hour cuts are completely out of their control. These are the decisions made completely from HQ and passed on to the store level. It is absolutely ridiculous the amount of workload that needs to get done with the below minimal hours provided.. There is literally nobody to take trucks, push to the floor, cover the floor, ect because the one person per work center is at the check lanes backing up. I'm just waiting for the moment the ETL's say forget this and start abandoning ship.. just wait for it... (PS, ETLs DO NOT GET YEARLY BONUSES FOR SAVING PAYROLL!!)

If your AC isn't working, then everyone is sweating. Well, except the TM who has to backstock frozen food. :D

You sound like you could use a change of workcenter, and I don't blame you. I have a certain respect for cart attendants because of all the work they do (including literally cleaning up s**t). Should the opportunity arise, see if you can get cross-trained in other areas. Not only will you understand what the rest of us put up with (though it's still not as bad as cleaning the restrooms), but you may get more hours too.

I love the perception tms have of what other people do all day. BTW - if those things weren't put on the shelf, we'd have no need for the carts. Nobody would be in the store. That actually is their work - to walk around the store, help guests find things, zone and work the pulls and reshop. Although the work should be completed quickly, walking casually is a lot more guest friendly. You won't see the backroom tms break a sweat - you're getting carts and covering breaks, etc. I guess my point is that every workcenter is important to the big picture - making sales and building guest relations that will ensure return visits. If the CAs were the only ones actually working your store would be in a very sorry state. I realize that our CAs do not do anywhere near the amount of work that they do at many other stores. I don't really know, but I can imagine that the CAs in the high volume stores are working incredibly hard - but they are doing their job just as tms on every other team are doing their jobs. If you haven't done the job, you really don't know all that it entails. I'm on instocks. Because I have a pda and printer I have tms ask me all day long to make clearance labels. I don't do that (at least not usually). They think all I do is scan and put grey dots up. It's a bit more complicated than that, but it's what they SEE me do. If you haven't been on the floor or in the backroom during the truck unload and push you have no idea what those tms do. It's the same for your job - everyone sees you pushing carts. Duh - even the guests can push carts. They have no idea what your job really is. I realize that our CAs do not do anywhere near the amount of work that CAs do at many other stores. There are reasons for that. (Our store hires developmentally disabled tms for this job. The core roles are most likely modified to meet the needs of a disabled employee. They work hard and they work well and they never NCNS. They are among our best employees.)

We have two such cart attendants at my store. One only gets scheduled once a week (and is never scheduled alone), but the other one works well, is reliable, and often gets called in when other CAs call in or NCNS.
