If I take a LOA for school (which my HR said was okay) do I have to come back in December or can I wait until the summer?

You would need to ask your etl-hr. Back when I was in hr it would just depend on each tm's school schedule and whether they were coming home during a break. Nowadays they may say you have to return to work in order to stay on LOA. Not sure...just ask your hr person.

We had a lot of college students who would come back during the Christmas break and we were glad to have them.

Can anyone clarify how long an EDU actually is? I'm on one and my HR is telling me that it's only a year but I went back during the holidays for a few weeks. I call TMSC and they tell me it's 2 years.

As far as I know, it was maximum of 1 year. That is, in order to keep your position, you could only be gone a maximum of 1 year. The 2 year rule could mean that you don't have a guaranteed spot when you return. Be weary of this-Target doesn't volunteer this info.
