Hey all. I just started working at Target on Wednesday. On my first day, I trained as a cashier even though I'm part of the hardlines team, and although it was very fast paced it wasn't too bad, and I seemed to enjoy it. Time went by super fast. Customers were nice and understanding, and my trainee was awesome. The next day, I started training for my proper position, and it drove me batshit crazy. I don't understand hardlines at all, and it gives me so much anxiety. I'm an extrovert that suffers from anxiety, and the whole walkie-talkie shebang and having customers ask me questions I don't know answers to was making me wanna cry, honestly. My trainer was a nice dude, but he kept leaving me in random places, and I was just completely lost. I do not understand at all what my daily tasks are. He was very nice though. I also didn't understand the whole planogram thing, and I know that it was only my first day training as hardlines and that it probably gets better afterwards, but I don't feel comfortable AT ALL in that position and I was wondering if it's possible for me to ask a manager if I could switch to cashier? On my first day as a cash rep, I was completely comfortable even my first hour in, and I feel like I would be a good addition to that team. However, I'm honestly really scared to ask and I don't want to look bad or anything. I just know I'm gonna end up resenting my job and hating it if I stay in hardlines. Do you guys think I would look some type of way if I ask to switch to cashier? And if I do, how should I ask?

It's your first day, you'll get used to it.
Yeah, I get what you're saying. However, I'm the type of person that when I don't like something the second I try it, it usually doesn't tend to grow on me and I have work tomorrow @ 10 and I'm genuinely dreading it efherewhjehfedsjh idk lol

Give yourself time, at least a week.
If you're still in panic mode, talk to the ETL-HL or ETL-HR about moving to the front lanes.
Just don't give up too quickly.

The stress you feel in HL will be amplified as a cashier with your constant monitoring, benchmarking, and red card orders.

Also, I'll ask: Have you worked retail before? I suffer from anxiety, and I'm an introvert. Retail has helped me immensely -- almost enough to put up with the pay. My anxiety has past. I'm comfortable and confident in my job and my decisions now.

Go to your etl-ge and say you really enjoyed cashiering and you can slay redcards. Every etl ge ive met complains how bad their cashiers are, so he would love to have you. If you seem to have a high potential and you ask your etl/-salesfloor he will obviously say no because he wants to keep you. If those managers are the same person than it shouldnt be a problem because quality cashiers are harder to find.

I was HL before they forced my to the front end and ^^^^^ is the truth, I have never been more stressed being a cashier than being HL, You will get used to it, I was the same way, just make sure your zoning is up to their standards and you will be golden.

I'm a new Hardlines TM also. I'm about two weeks out of training, and I promise it gets better. My first few days were rough, and it was so stressful. But by the end of my training and after a day of real work, I felt confident as ever and I now actually really enjoy my job. The best thing to do is ask as many questions as you can to your trainer and other TM's. It's better to ask than guess.

Also, allow me to say that cashiering as your main job will be just as, if not more stressful than Hardlines. It is for me anyway. I picked up a seven hour register shift the other day and dear god I wanted to kill myself three hours in. I much prefer the floor and doing the occasional backup run when they need it. I strongly suggest you wait a little while and get a bit more into the groove of things on the floor before you try to change your work center.
