Is one of the job duties of a GSA/GSTL counting all the money in the registers at the end of the night? Who keeps track of all the money the store makes at the end of the night? Is it head cashier or one of the etls? Haha just curious how all that is kept tracked.

Gstl or GSA would bagged the funds in the box. CO would confirm the bags for shortages or overages. If you are GSA, you get some training on this function.

They don't count the money; they just replace the start funds.
Counting is done by the cash office TM next morning.

This. Some stores may have GSAs who are cash office trained, and this is best practice. Other stores use other TMs.

Another tidbit on top of this is that the GSTL/GSA that is closing the night before is not allowed to work cash office the next morning, for obvious reasons.

The GSTL/GSA will at night remove all the money (as well as coupons, checks and any media slips) from the registers and replace them with new funds for the next day as explained above. Then the LOD goes in with the GSTL/GSA to verify the bags and make sure the safe matches the opening count from the cash office team member (with any adjustments).

Coming from a bigger store that has a lot of registers and has to wait for all guests to leave before removing ANYTHING from the registers, closing can be very tedious. But in some ways, after dealing with loud guests all day, the complete silence of the store is amazing.

GSA is allowed to work CO next morning, we did it at my store. It doesn't make any difference if that TM happened to be unscrupulous and steal -- no matter who closed the night before it changes nothing. This sounds like a "store rule" more than a best practice.

I've closed and worked CO next morning as well. I regularly organize the bags, but do it even nicer when I know I'm CO the next day!

If the GSA can't do cash office the day after they close, then they shouldn't be allowed on any registers the day before, either.

That's interesting! It very well could be just a store thing, but I understand why our store frowns upon it. Our district has had issues before with people messing around in the cash office so I guess anything to lessen the chance of something suspicious happening. Now that I think about it further, I have closed once and done the CO the next morning but it was due to a vacation and had to get my ETL-APs approval beforehand. Good to see though there are stores that are less strict about these things, we're not even a high risk store lol.

I think it's frowned upon, but it happens semi-regularly at my store; If you're taking money from the cash office ap WILL catch you regardless.
Interesting tidbit: I have a friend who works "accounting" (cash office) at walmart, and they can't login to a register or anything if they're going to be processing that sales date.

I clopened a lot, and frequently had to close and then do 239 in the morning.

My ETL-HR and GE were pretty good, on weekends they'd let us do 239 later. Weekdays were always 7am for the most part, but Weekends would typically be 9a-12p.

I did frequent clopens where I was closing GSA & opening CO.
Sounds like a store rule which makes sense depending on the store.
I remember one yr training new COTMs for 2 stores that had termed theirs for theft.
I don't get the thinking behind that. If there's ONE place in the store chock-full of cameras, it would be cash office.

Seriously, I'm nervous just putting my hand in my pocket to grab a pen in the CO...those thieving TMs sure are being bold!

One of the reasons I won't do CO, I am always digging in my pockets for stuff. But seriously that is the last place to pull shenanigans they actually do watch that.. I've seen so many cashiers fired and arrested and one CO walked out in cuffs by our local PD.. She had no clue they caught on to what she was doing..

One of my ETLs had a good way of reaching into his pockets. Clap your hands twice, and put both arms/hands out straight. Show you have nothing in your possession, and then reach into your pockets.

When I would do 239, I would empty my pockets and put my phone/wallet/keys on a shelf in plain view of the cameras.

Sound like that ETL spent time in a casino dealing cards.

@ExpertTL are u really not allowed to start banking lanes til the last guest leaves we start 2 hours before close at my store.

I would imagine it varies by store. At my store, we usually start about an hour before close. The GSTL/GSA leaves a few unused registers open until close in case of back-ups.

I find it inefficient to not close until after the last guest has left. The only reason I could think of is if it were a high risk store, maybe a little safer? Other than that it seems really counterproductive to me. We start about an hour before close and leave one register open for overnight which they rebank at 2am.

I will say we used to do it as everyone is saying when I first started--close most unused registers and make sure to leave enough open for backups that night. However a couple years back we had a GSTL in our district get robbed while they were closing some of the unused registers which started the whole thing. Clearly our district is a lot more strict about these things only due to events in which there has been a theft or robbery. We have 3 high risk stores in our district I believe so a lot of things get done as district wide changes but our store has never been robbed during hours in the last 8 years or so.

On one hand, I would like to go back to how it used to be, but I would never want to be in that position where someone was holding me at gunpoint or something so in some ways I'm okay with it. When I was GSTL after smart banking I had gotten pretty quick where I could close our 32 registers and be inside the C/O within 25 minutes or so on most nights.

Does it make sense to anyone that the gstl is scheduling herself to do the cash office 2 days a week in lieu of trained gsa's doing it? Well besides the fact that she doesn't want to have closing shifts.

I would think her time would be better put to use on other projects instead of
Mindless counting and bagging.

It I had to close all the registers after the store was closed I think I would get done much faster then when I start closing while the store is opened.
There is to much running back and forth to guest services and to the registers. It's cumbersome to be doing that running with big red in tow.
