Archived Rehire or no Rehire, that is the question

So I first off need to vent....I actually almost screamed. Okay I did. A little. Okay a lot.

I've applied for and *conditionally* been offered an internship with the Department of Justice; United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit...It requires a background check and a security clearance.

Meaning my background will be dug into extensively. I am being as detailed as possible and need to be able to answer the question: Are you eligible for rehire at Target?

The background check will entail an investigation by a special agent; though I'm not sure how thorough they will be with Target, there is a chance they will be getting a visit at my last store.

I know my eligibility at most all my employers (1 more outside of Target). The other employer quickly provided the information I needed once I explained the situation. The TMSC was VERY rude, told me no way in hell was I getting the information from either them or the stores; even though I just wanted to CONFIRM from a previous TMSC rep who said I was eligible for rehire about a year ago. She also told me that the work verification system they use (the website) for prospective employers background checks will not state that I'm eligible for rehire. He was mad cool.

Before I explain my Target situation, well my last round with Target, let me say, above all, I do regret how I left. I should have had the balls to tell them "hey, xxx is my last day, KMA, sorry" or something along those lines.

I gave my notice. The employer I was going to go to work for moved up my orientation date and I stopped showing up.

Anyways, do you guys think it will be worth it to go down to the store even though the TMSC agent told me they wouldn't release the info? I tried to get the work verification number out of her but she said there was only a website, do you guys have any other suggestions? I would really appreciate any and all advice. Hey All-

The Work Number is who you use. It's the only way to find any info. Legally, Target cannot give any info out, so they utilize this third party. You can get the data report yourself to see what it shows.

Just google theworknumber. You can also search for Targets employer code.

It's a safe bet if you stopped showing up you were coded as a voluntary termination for job abandonment and keyed as nonrehireable.

TMSC was probably being a jerk, but he can't tell you anything. You could apply to a store and then call and ask to a HRTM and see if they'll tell you, but they could lose their job if they do tell you.

Hopefully, any background check that spits out "non-rehirable" would still give you a chance to explain the circumstances of why & how you left the place.

If you do get called in for another interview - stay calm & friendly and explain the circumstances without bad mouthing Target. Take that high road.

And this should be a lesson to everyone - no matter how much you hate your job OR the people who are your bosses - do NOT burn your bridges because you never know how it might come back to haunt you in the future. IF you are going to leave - let them know. If you have to call out every day until the date you are scheduled to leave. Leave on good terms.

Tell the background check people you're not sure about your status at Target. They're not trying to find out if you're perfect, they're trying to find out if you're HONEST and if you're a security risk. Being non-rehireable at Target is nothing in terms of a security background check. They won't care.

1st, Congratulations with your internship!
2nd, as someone who has gone through a law enforcement background investigation, be as thorough and honest as possible. Your background investigator will contact your former store, and likely will show up in person to talk to anyone you worked with who is still there. They can, and likely will, forgive you not giving proper notice; they will not forgive hiding anything, or purposely leaving stuff out, and failing a background investigation for deception can and will disqualify you from all future criminal justice system jobs!!

Your store ETLS can refuse a interview , but the Investgitor will likely get a court order to interview them, if they still refuse they can be charged with messing with a federal investigation

I would be surprised if an investigator didn't show up at the store to talk to anyone, but they likely wouldn't try to press charges for obstruction of justice.

I found out I was eligible for rehire (they keyed it as if I left with notice)

HOWEVER, I have explained in great detail on the background form that I left Target, provided notice, but did not work it. The Store keyed me as eligible for rehire.

To clear up something for ya'll, if the store were to refuse a contact visit from the FBI and answer their questions, they have 2 options, which I'll list in order of likeliness
1) They can usually get the information they need through other sources, such as personnel files, and everything that has a paper trail they can and will find
2) If they need information and can gain it through no other source, the agent can partner with appropriate counsel and apply for a Writ of Mandamus; in this case used to tell you that the district court is ordering you to provide information contained in the order or face (a) possible indirect civil contempt sanction(s). This is time consuming and is, from what I gather, only used in extreme cases due to cost.

@TallAPGuy I live in California now but worked for Target across the country, like all the way across...I have an initial contact interview with the special agent this week as well...Will they travel all the way across the country to interview them in person or conduct it over the phone? Any advise for meeting the agent? Thank you!

I work for the gov't. They interviewed ETLs and the STL at my store, and they also talked to people in my old squadron back in GA. They will speak with people regardless of job title. The level of security is more important than the job. They will also interview neighbors and other references listed.

The interviews were in person in GA, FL, PA, VA, and MD. They don't travel, they have investigators stationed everywhere in the U.S. If the investigator doesn't have time to travel then the interviews can be over the phone.

Well, my BI was for an internship with a municipal police department, so it will be a little different (well, the one I ever heard anything back about, anyway).
Your primary agent won't travel cross country, but since it's likely either the FBI or US Marshals Service doing your investigation, they'll have an agent closer go talk to your former store.
As for meeting with your agent, be yourself, don't try to sell yourself as someone you're not, and admit if you're nervous. And they really do ask some personal questions, don't they? (I was asked what porn sites I vivisited most often)

And they'll ask those references for more people who know you, and those people for more people, and so on and so on until they reach a point that they're getting 99% people they've already talked to or plan on talking to.

I had to go through a thorough background check/poly/prints for my current state govt job. I told them on my background check interview that Target will only verify my employment, time worked, and rehire status. And that they don't typically sit down for interviews and answer anything more in detail.

I gave my Background agent the Work Verifcation number and store number with my ETLs names. But they never talked to anyone at my store. My interviewer ended up talking to my family, landlord, professors, a few friends, and such.

When my friend was interviewing at the CIA, one of the CIA interviewers said to him to just be honest in all steps of the application. The interviewer then went on to say "Like for drug use. I was a teenager during the 60s. I lived the 60s. I'm still here."

So, just raise any red flags for them before they discover them on their own. Because, they will discover them.

UPDATE: I was completely honest with the investigator and all seemed to go well. I raised all red flags for them. One being, during college to pay for expenses, I did a brief stint as a model on flirt4free. The initial investigator reached back out to me, her voice and words somewhat apologetic, told me that because of the graphic content and "moral turpitude" required to pass a secret security clearance, a decision was made to not clear me for the position.

I don't regret it, it's my body and you'd be AMAZED what men will pay to see you shake your ass- i just wish my personal decisions which have no bearing on national security, would not be taken into account. Oh well.

I think their reason would be "if you did that for $$ would you give away sensitive information for $$?" The answer can easily be no and has no relation to the normal person but it's enough to raise concern for the agency awarding the clearance.

Sorry to hear this. Not being able to get a clearance blocks a lot of job opportunities. But what I find interesting is that former drug users (I.e. Cocaine) can get a secret clearance. TS is harder. Wonder if time has to do with it?

Thanks @Mhugh220 . i can see their rationale; although i totally disagree with it. I found out about five days ago and tomorrow i have a interview for a PAID internship because of my grades and qualifications. Of course this is in the private sector. The recruiter i talked to extensively told me they could care less what i did so long as it wasn't illegal. I'll just go into the private sector, makes 3-8x more money and donate and volunteer My heart out.

I disagree with it too. I work in the private sector but all of our clients are government. Definitely more money being a contractor but we still have to have clearences. You should be in the clear in a few years since the background check for secret is 5-7 years in the past. In the future, if you didn't murder someone or get convicted for something - let the investigation find stuff without your help. I wonder if they would have found that without prior knowledge.

The only thing I could think of is if your position was going to have anything to do with what goes on in the courtroom itself. If that was the case, a defense attorney, or the most disgruntled side in a lawsuit, could find out about it and air it out to dry in an attempt to discredit you and the court.

@TallAPGuy it was for a junior internship with a circuit judge. While I would be directly reporting to a senior law clerk, I would occasionally be working directly with the judge, researching case law, and make recommendations based on precedent.

@Mhugh220 The thing is- the only reason i wanted the internship was to eventually become a judge myself. Clerking with a judge is really helpful in that aspect. However I do have other legal passions- which do not require clearances. Since they decided not to clear me on this background check, I doubt I would ever be even considered for a judgeship.

Maybe not at the federal level, bu you could always run for an elected judge position, which could lead to a position on the state appellate court.
