So I've heard there are ways to validate checks... look for raised printing, lower check numbers can be issued from a new account (but could also indicate fake checks), the smear test... but I've never heard of cashiers having to validate, other than checking i.d.s. Do Target registers check validity when they are inserted for printing?

To my knowledge, the register just reads the numbers at the bottom of the check (routing #, account #, and check #). If any sort of test is done in-store, it would be done in the cash office, but I would imagine the bank handles it primarily.

The register validates the routing number & the ID. It doesn't mean the ID is tied to the acct but that it & the ID each are valid.
If the check is less than $50 & the routing validates, it seldom asks for ID.
Over $50, it's gonna ask for ID after running the routing #.
If the ID has been tied to bad checks, it'll reject the check & they'll have to use another form of payment.
