So I've worked at Target for a number of years, in a variety of roles as a TM, specialist and TL. I'm not a TL anymore; I voluntarily stepped down a year ago for personal reasons. I enjoy working for Target, and I've accumulated a vast amount of knowledge over the years that I would like to be able to continue to use, instead of basically tossing it all away if I changed companies. All that said, I'm really not interested in doing the TL/ETL/STL track, etc. I did the TL for several years, and while I can do it well it's just not something I enjoy.

All that prefacing said now, does anyone around here have knowledge of what other options there are? I mean, I'm aware in general of things like both the business partners, as well as the corporate level stuff but I could use more specific advice. I think I would enjoy something like the Remodel Specialist position, or maybe something like designing the planograms/ISM campaigns or something. I know that the business partner positions are usually used as a stepping stone for ETLs to STL, but is that always the case? Are there other options that I'm not aware of? It seems crazy to me that unless you want to go in to management, there aren't a whole lot of options for a TM that excels at there job, works hard and is reliable, and is extremely adaptable to move up at Target.

Only positions that come to mind are the SFT / specialty positions. Maybe facilities mgmt? The only thing UP the ladder is management it seems.

Pretty sure the planograms and such are written by chimps. LOL. But seriously, you could inquire at Minneapolis about how to get that job. I don't think the people designing planograms and ISM go through the usual route. TL - ETL - DTL whatever. They are probably specifically hired for that postion.

Try for a corporate position if you're willing to relocate or are near MN.

SFT and AP are technically outside of the "store structure" when it comes to promotions/headcount, so you might find success as an APS, IS, or Investigations Tech. Facilities Management is an interesting role - Sr.TL pay with fixed hours. Weekends/holidays off, and minimal knowledge is required to jump in to the role.

Go to school graduate and start looking at the corporate positions. Also (IMO) AP is technically "UP" (Sr. TPS and above anyway), the hours are always good and the opportunities at the Target ICs are pretty cool if you're interested in investigative work.

Yeah life outside the "Stores" pyramid is great! Facilities Management, Law (AP), Merchandising (MPD, ISM) is all cool stuff. Take a look at the Target careers website, find something you're qualified for, and get that cover letter/application in! There have been conflicting opinions about this, but I'm sure HQ takes into consideration and values store-side experience.
