For a typical cashier, what are the hours per week like? I asked this question in the live chat and was told about 4 shifts of 4 hours a week. Is this about right for most stores? Say I wanted to bring my check up to 20 or 25 hours one week, after only getting 15 for example, could I take another shift that someone called in?

Swap shift is your friend. Open availability is a good thing too. Also, let your gstl know, you want to be on the first call list.

Have your HR person check and see what your max hrs are in your settings. There used to be a setting that we could change in MAX to show how long you wanted your shifts to be and how many hrs per week you wanted to average.
And yes, let them ALL know that you'd like to be called if there are any call offs.

When my store still used MAX, I could only choose my max hours per week. It never gave me the option to specify my preferred shift length, though that option may have existed before I was hired.

Always check the swap shift board/binder. people make plans and try to get their shift covered all the time. Another good thing to do is everyday you are leaving and arent scheduled for a while, tell your gstl at the time and any LOD in the building to call you in for a callout! If you are past your 90 day period you can also ask to crosstrain.

Apparently, my store is the ONLY store that has been given MORE cashier hours through myTime.

It used to be, that cashiers typically worked 4-6 hour shifts... Now, more often then not my cashiers are getting 8 hour shifts! And shocker, I'm getting two cashiers at once or they are overlapping for more than 30 minutes! Most of my cashiers are retirees or older individuals and actually preferred the 4 hour shifts because it was less standing and have started limiting their availability.

The only downside is the fact that my service desk TM is coming later... We used to have 1 cashier and 1 SDesk TM at 8:00... Now I'm getting 2 cashiers at 8 and with my service desk TM coming in at 9 or 10. Another downside is instead of having to cover 2 lunches (the GSA and Food Ave) I now have to worry about covering 4-5 (my cashiers, mine, Food Ave, and sometimes SDesk)... So a solid 2-3 hours of my day is just for breaking and lunches.

I wish I had cashier hours like that, although yeah they probably would limit their hours since they're all either elderly or high school kids. Right now we have 1 cashier at 8, service desk is usually starting at 9 or later (oftentimes SD is one of the GSAs doing CO first...this sunday I'm doing CO at 10:30 AM so nobody at SD until noon) and they're out by 8:30 PM leaving the GSA and 1 cashier (2nd to last cashier is usually out at 8). No cart attendants period except sometimes on weekends. I pretty much literally have no time for anything except covering breaks/lunches, getting carts, checking people out, getting change requests, and closing lanes at night.

I've been getting a lot of cashier hours with MyTime. I was only getting 14-20 a week, and now I'm getting closer to 25 and 30.

The best way to get more hours is to get as many Red Cards as you can. They are more likely to ask you to stay late or call you in if you can help out with numbers. Open availability helps too. Being able to work multiple areas also helps, but if hours are short they will not be able to allocate hours to train you.

I'm actually a GSA so I get low-mid 30s base every week, was more talking about scheduled cashier hours during my shifts. Good advice for our cashiers though! I'd say the most important thing you can do is be willing to stay late or come in early, among the other things mentioned. LODs at my store are much more likely to exhaust every option already coming in for the day before pulling out the rolodex and calling TMs who aren't supposed to come in.

Cashier hours can vary greatly by store, time of year, etc etc. Cashier scheduling is 100% guest driven, so it's all based on sales forecasts and whatnot. I'd say that around 1/3 of our cashiers have 6-8.5 hours shifts, and 2/3 have 4-6 hour shifts.

Yeah see in our case a cashier taking a lunch is maybe a once a month event and usually only happens because someone was called in or picked up another shift or was asked to stay. On paper they're pretty much 100% scheduled for 5.5 hour shifts or less.

Same with ours. It's nice though, not having to worry about covering anybodies half except your own.
