I am a cashier/trainer and have only been there for 1 year but i do other things at my target such as guest service, pharmacy cashier, food ave, hardlines, softlines and sometimes cover for my gstl for breaks and lunches. There is a position open for signing not sure if i would want it but they get more hours (f/t position). My gstl told me if i get it i wont be able to go back to cashiering. Just want to find out from other team members if it is worth the pay/hours. I am really interested in a GSTL position when available

I think signing is a full time position, or at least depending on the store. I think it is N09 paygrade so $1 raise? Signing guys help me here.

Signing is a full time position, used to be a specialist.
Hours depend on work load and what other things you can work into your duties (adset).

Thank you, It my GSTL right and if i dont like the signing i cant go back to cashering

Are you doing ad-set signing or plano signing? There's a difference between the two.

If you're doing plano signing, the one thing that concerns me is that you do not have plano experience (from what work centers you say you know).

I usually get 32 hours a week, if not more, but this year has been really odd...less than 20 hours this week and next week. Parts of the summer are also slow, don't get a lot of hours then either.

If it's a posted position, it's Signing specialist (signing specialized team member, blah blah whatever the hell they call it nowadays). They wouldn't post for ad-set signing, since that isn't an official position.

If you apply for and accept the position, you should intend to keep it for a while. It is a complicated, demanding position, and they will have to devote significant resources to training you. Deciding three weeks in that it isn't for you, well... let's just say that's the sort of move that would not bode well for your future employment prospects at the store. So, while you might be able to take it and then decide to step back down to cashier after all, you're gonna be wasting a lot of people's time and money, and you'll likely be stuck at the cashier position for the foreseeable future--why would they risk promoting you again after what you did the first time?

That being said, if you are willing to spend a year or two in that role before moving to GSTL, I personally believe it's the absolute best feeder position for TLs. You will have to manage your own time and workload (for the most part), coordinate with everyone in the store (primarily the plano team, of course), etc. It's a position with a lot of responsibility and plenty of opportunity to show that you can handle being held accountable for your specific, individual performance, and it's actually a position where you can largely control your own results (as opposed to, say, cashiering, where you really can't help it if everyone you check out already has a RedCard, or you get a whole week of change-counting grannies and your speed score dips, etc.).

Don't take the signing position if you aren't willing to be dumped in hard.
It's not easy, it's pretty stressful, and it has a real steep learning curve (like 90 degrees steep).
But you get to learn the entire store, work in all the departments, have a sense of whats going on that very few people do and are autonomous in a way very few other TM's can be.
It just takes serious organization skills, some major origami technique, an immunity to paper cuts, being able to be whined at, and the ability to figure out how to make things work when they don't fit the way they're supposed to.

What commie said, i enjoy signing most days* im usually left alone to complete my workload/the never ending cleaning and organizing signs and fixtures, ive just started the process of clearung out the fuxture room that hasnt been purged since man first made fire, seriously just throw it away i dont need 5 maui skyball bins, why do i have these because old ptl was a pack rat and kept EVERYTHING, if you take signing youll be in for a wikd ride but you missed out on color changes everything that was fun.

Thank you everyone for your response. I have been at target for a year. i was seasonal and was kept and i have has the opp. to venture to other areas of the store. That being said i would one day like to be a GSTL. This is something i will have to think very hard about as my other team members and GSTLs have told me they approve and would like to see me grow. Thanks again everyone.

Interesting, they made our ad-prep person interview for the job as well...so the job is split between the two of us. I do the plano part, she does the ad-prep part.

Everything ptl said is spot on. If you get this position and choose not to do it, it will not look good for you. They told me the same thing when I got the position...that if I choose to step down, I have to transfer to a different store.

How comfortable are you with reading and picking apart planograms? Problem-solving and troubleshooting?

Commiecorvus summed up my day...every day. Not to mention having people dump everything in the fixture room for me to pick up, trash all the boxes to find something they're looking for, and leaving a mess behind. Not to mention the laughable "predicted" times to complete the workload.

I'll be interested to see how many hours the position has...Has anybody else noticed the signing hours are less this year as compared to last year? I haven't seen a 40-hour week of signing for awhile...been about 20 hours of signing.

If you really want to promote to GSTL, I suggest going for a GSA position.
