The Target abbreviation for this phrase is DC.
A Distribution Center or DC is a Target facility that receives merchandise from manufacturers or vendors, sorts it, repackages it (in the case of music, movies, and various clothing items) and either stores it in a warehouse or puts it on Target semi-trailers to be shipped to stores.
Typically operations in the DC are broken down into the following groups
Inbound: the department that unloads all the freight that arrives at the DC.
Warehouseing: when an item is received at the DC and is not going to be moved to a store immediately this is the department that will store it.
Packing: the department responsible for packing out the repack boxes your store receives.
Outbound: they fill your trailers and preform a few other duties in the DC.
There are other departments that serve as support for the DC's operations such as HR, AP, and E&F. other departments may exist based on the level of automation at your DC.
Food Distribution Center
The Target abbreviation for this phrase is FDC.
A Food Distribution Center or FDC is a distribution center with the added facilities to receive, store, and ship refrigerated and frozen food to stores. Target began servicing its stores with FDC's in 2009, gradually replacing C&S and SuperValu as grocery distributor.
