Archived Getting past a Final Warning

Look everywhere for work. I have read your journey for a while now and I sincerely think they are trying to sabotage you in whatever way they can. Target is a mess. You deserve better.
I agree. Sounds like you were being targeted. (No pun intended.)

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The FW still hasn't been delivered to me but I am already prepared to give them trouble when they do present it. I will refuse to sign it, which I understand doesn't mean anything (still annoys them a bit), I will challenge them on the ridiculousness of it being a Final fucking Warning, and I will point out that more people have done what I did and have never been written up for it. I am mad as hell and I want them to know it.

With ETLs who talk about Nazis, TLs who refer to guests as "crack whores," and corporate TMs who call people "fucking GSAs," with no corrective action issued against them, it's no wonder this company is going to hell. The only time they write people up anymore is when they want to get rid of them, as is clearly the case for me.

Soon -- but certainly not soon enough -- I will get the fuck out of this hellhole.

Are the other TMs all male? Some would construe that as sexual discrimination, if that's the case.

Its all on how they write up the corrective action.

Granted a single utter of colorful language my just warrant a warning. Just the wrong person hearing or the context it was spoken it is all it takes to be written up.

You could be only looking a month to a year. And during that time, you cannot be considered for positions or transfers.

Flabber, you need to either play a card or get you a camera and put it on your name tag and catch someone on tape. Rat them out and get your way.

So I mentioned in Chat earlier today that I was put on Final because I had uttered the B-word in front of some team members who apparently felt it offensive enough to go to the STL with and get me fired over. Even though this was a first offense, was never uttered in front of guests (just team members), I was told it would be a Final. They have not yet issued the write-up probably because they feel like making my life miserable. Granted, I should not have said it, but I don't feel like it warranted a Final at all. Not even a CA. But they don't care. This is my wake up call to get the hell out of Spot and look for other employment.

But until I find other employment, I am stuck here. I'm not happy about it, though. I don't feel comfortable being around my ETL or other ETLs/STL because I am certain they are judging me. After this I will never be considered for TL. Not like that was going to happen anyway but with this on my record, even the slimmest chance I may have had is for sure gone. I feel like a failure as a person and as a leader (GSA). I don't feel like there's any way to get past this. If I had another job right now, my 2 weeks would be in.

Does anyone have advice on how to deal with this? How to get past this?
Call the hotline.

Call the hotline.

And say what? The hotline will probably side with the store, since it can be construed as creating an "unsafe environment" or some similar bullshit.

They still haven't delivered it to me, so I don't know what official reasoning they're going to use.

Wow.

And here's me who's said in response to a massive price change issue on channel 3 on the walkie "oh son of a bitch" to the ETL-GE asking for the price check and the guest heard me say that.

I had one of those moments, not at Target but working as a chef on line that was right in front of the customers because we did display cooking (lots of fire and pan work)
So we're in the middle of dinner rush and a bit in the weeds when the power goes out.
There's that moment where everybody freezes and it's dead silent, no fans, nothing, which is when bright boy here, says in his chef bellow "Motherfucker!"
Needless to say the head of house wan't too happy with me when the lights came up.

Our store's power went out during a storm last year as we were finishing drinks.
The lights flickered, went out completely & there was a hush throughout the store.
So quiet, so still, so everyone heard the barista next to me when she said "Aw, shit..." quite clearly.

When the generator kicked the emergency lights on, I was suddenly by myself looking around for the culprit.

Can anyone tell me if it is actually Target policy for a simple utterance of a single swear word -- not said to any guests but simply muttered under one's breath -- to be given an automatic Final? Is that *really* the policy? Because I just can't believe that. I was told the category for the Final is "Serious Offense." Is what I did really bad enough for a Serious Offense classification?

If there's even a smidgen of a chance I could prove they're going overboard here I would like to call the Hotline.

Be honest you are lucky it wasn't instant termination. At our store there was a GSA who told a guest to f-you and she was instantly terminated and escorted from the building. It didn't matter that the guest was swearing at her up and down first and threatening her. Even if only tm' s heard you it violates the " hostile workplace policy." This could have been instant termination if they had strong enough evidence or a final if they're giving you the benefit of the doubt. You can come back from a final though. Its on your record for a year.

I didn't swear at or to the guest, though. I muttered it under my breath. It literally happens all the time, every single day. TLs and ETLs do it at my store. Also, no guests heard me, just a few team members.

If instant termination was the answer to this, we'd have to fire the majority of the store.

I witnessed my STL curse out an ETL in the backroom a few weeks ago. Several TMs heard her and nothing else was said about it (no one had ever seen her that mad before).

I have to agree to disagree on this. So many of the ETLs I worked with, and even the STL, all had potty mouths. How can they hold people accountable when they do the exact same thing? Lead by example!

What the fuck. My store just has a "no swearing on the salesfloor" policy. And that only came about after a guest complained about a TMs potty mouth (when they didn't know she was there). Even then I haven't heard of anyone getting disciplined for it.

If the F word was said to a guest or where a guest could hear it...then I could see a strong warning/write up. I am not so sure about the Final warning...However, like someone else said its all about whos ass you kiss. When Spot loves you they love you...you can do no wrong....but when they decide to turn on you watch out. Keep your head down, do your job the best you can...and don't say anything to or around anyone that could be remotely considered, cursing, negative etc. Lastly, something I learned the hard way. DONT TRUST ANYONE...don't say anything to anyone that you work with that you wouldn't want repeated...unless you know that you know that you know...they are trust worthy

Just want to update this thread as it's been over a month now and they still haven't actually delivered the Final to me. In fact, it hasn't even been spoken of since the day they said I would get it back when I made the post. I'm hoping they completely forgot about it, or they realized they had a poor justification for it. It's also possible they just wanted to scare me.

Fuggedaboutit!!! I am sure they just said it knowing that it would upset youand cause you anxiety. I bekieve thst is one of Spot`s more subtle punishments. I am glad it is over, that was absolutely Ludacris and I dont mean the rapper

I say shit, fuck, and damn it under my breath all the time while I'm on the floor. Working at Target and dealing with uppity demanding people can make you lose your shit. If anyone disagrees with that, go work at a retail store or fast food dump and see how ya feel.

Yep, I did it too, Jack. It was a way to keep me calm. As long as I said it low enough, no one ever heard me.
