Archived Have anyone heard about the petition to keep Target from opening at midnight.

For all of those that say you don't eat dinner with your family at midnight, what about those that have family out of town? And since Target closes all time-offs in like August for the holidays, it's going to be harder and harder to be your family even for just 24h.

I don't mean this as a rude question, but is Target really a place people plan on working for for years and years? It seems like more of means to an end (depending on the job title and pay) for a lot of employees, especially the younger ones.

Actually, many TMs at my store have been there for years & years (avg 14 yrs). Some of us started out PT or seasonal & just wound up staying. Some stay because of benefits, some for flexable hrs & some have managed to eke out a little better than min wage.
Of course, most of us stay because there aren't any better job prospects in the area even though we're always looking...

I can understand why people would want to stay. I worked at my local WalMart in high school and have only worked a week so far at Target and have already had a much better experience. Plus we have way better merchandise to get a discount on. ;)

OK, so this petition is not just about this one guy wanting the day off. The bigger issue is the way that our society has become so "money" oriented and how the family is becoming less and less important.
Another issue is the fact that we, as a society, are allowing commercialism to "run" our lives.....and he is angry enough about it to stand up to it. The fact that the store is Target is just one of the side issues. I mean, isn't it easier to pick a retailer who is nationally known to be the store of choice? The fact that he picked Target is because he works here, yes, but also Target is known for its "family friendly" attitude and by having people come to work on the holiday is about as "unfamily friendly" as you can get.

So, forget about the hours.....look at the larger picture.....stores opening early are infringing on people's personal rights...and affecting our society as a whole.

BTW, at least if this guy is fired from Target, he has another job to fall back on. I, for one, am glad that he's standing up for what is right.

I've heard about it and don't give two ************s about it because: 1) i no longer work for target. 2) it damn well won't succeed. But I understand the reason WHY.

When you signed the piece of paper employing you at Target, you should have known better that Holiday hours are going to suck. Same applies to any other retail outlet.

All the people complaining are a bunch of sissies.

When I came on during Summer 2000, at that time no one told me anything about Black Friday. In my hometown, the only stores that got slammed for BF were in the mall. So I was expecting to head home day before Thanksgiving (5 hr drive from school) and come back Friday morning to do my usual closer shift.

I ended up getting scheduled for opening. And I decided not to head home since I would be on the road more than at home. I was bummed since it was my first Thanksgivign away from home but I wasn't mad.

I'm really tired of hearing "you knew what you were getting into by working in retail."
When I applied at my store in 2006 we were told then that Target had three days off a year.....Easter....THANKSGIVING...and Christmas. Nothing was ever mentioned about any other holiday. I've no problem with the awful hours you can get on BF, Xmas eve, New Years Day, Independence day, or any other of the 362 days we're expected to be there. BF is OK, too....but as soon as they (Target) began to ask people to come in on THANKSGIVING day then they have broken their promise of having three days off a year.
Even last year people came in to get things done on Wednesday so they could be off with family....and then opening at 4am gave people the chance to get things done before the opening on BF. So, no one had to lose any family time that day.
So, please don't continue with the excuses of knowing what I was getting into for working retail....I knew and was promised that I'd have three days off. The problem now belongs to Target and explaining why they are breaking their own rule.

You must have no life or a dead family to be saying something like that.

Ya it sucks and believe me I am not happy about it but remember it is one day out of the year one day. Sure it would be nice if that petition actually worked but I kinda doubt it but sadly we all have to suck it up and work and deal with it. Remember it is only one day out of the year and we won't have to deal with it again until next year. My one friend said dude I work 10 hrs a day on my feet stop complaining ya he shut me up real fast lol

No I will be spending Thanksgiving with my family. We will be done before it comes even close to the time I need to be at work (11:30pm). Even if I had to work earlier than that, I wouldn't be complaining. Crazy holiday hours are a fact of retail.

The only way it wouldn't work is if sales were through the floor & we know THAT won't happen.

I have a funny feeling when I show up for work on Thanksgiving that I will be one of the few that are there to work. Most will probably call off.

I refuse to work before 6 am. There is no need for it in my opinion.(a least notfor Salesfloor/P-fresh) If my job didn't depend on it I wouldn't work on Black Friday. All it does is attract the worst of humanity literally willing to kill over their greed. I would never work any of the major holidays either (July 4th, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving)

That being said I still wouldn't support the petion.

I refuse to work before 6 am but guess there are people out there who don't care about getting a decent night's sleep. I usually leave the Thanksgiving party at my Aunt's around 9pm and even though I could stay up all night to work a shift(I have gone 36+ hours without sleep before) I wouldn't have the focus that I would require to provide good guest service or quality/productive work.(reshop/zone).(and no I don't mean being impaired by alcohol)

BTW the petition ended up getting over 200,000 signatures.

yeah and target still opened at midnight, so it was a waste of time. Like ther best buy one, it was started by a disgruntled employee who was pissed because he had to stop his midnight dinner.

I've heard this on here and several other places, but to be clear, it is illegal to fire someone just for trying to organize a union. Another scare tactic to try to prevent people from unionizing.
