My store opens at 8am and I was scheduled at store open. Yesterday I was scheduled at 9am and pretty much did nothing until there were pulls available on the line. Should I expect that this morning too? I could never find my LOD and my store has an unusual shortage of walkies in the morning (well, all the time). A person can only do abandons for so long--and yesterday someone was assigned to do abandons so that left me with not much to do for a few hours.

You definitely need to get with your LOD to see what they want you to do. If it's not reshop, it may be a 4x4. Or they may have another special project in mind...especially the day before Thanksgiving.

I know that your store may be different, but in my friend's store, which is gigantic and insane, that hour is to really prepare for the day and assist guests. There's always something to be done, really. My advice is to take a deep breath, enjoy the small break in anarchy, and spend time giving great guest service and making sure everything's in order. Asking the LOD for something to do will usually just lead to busy work or whatever else to have you doing something.

The best advice my buddy ever got for Hardlines is to always find a project to take on before going ask for something to do. Chances are that you'll easily find something small to do, get to choose what you're spending your time on, appear to be self-motivated, and if there's something else they'd rather you do, they'll tell you. Don't do anything too crazy or waste time on something you know isn't worthwhile, but if you know that the rugs are always half-assed or the zone always misses a spot, no one will fault you for going tackle that if there really is nothing to do. A terrible closing shift is usually the result of things building up for days or being overlooked all day. Think about what sucks to tackle late when you close and start taking a chunk out of it early so that touch ups throughout the day keep it nice. That way, closing requires less effort to get it sparkling, and the opening TMs have less make up work to do and can get ahead of things, too.

The one lesson my friend picked up quick is that things snowball quick to the point of being in a state of perpetual recovery, and when things actually "reset" and start fresh, days are much more pleasant for everyone. So basically just give great customer service and find little projects until someone gives you one. If you want to be given a task, by all means go ask the LOD, but chances are that they're aware how slow it is and will give you something less appealing to do anyway.

Like I said before, though, my friend's store is really its own beast, and he has no experience in small or low volume stores. If your store is immaculate and there really is nothing to do, enjoy being paid to do very little to be in a certain location walking around.

I'm set to do abandons all day. There were 15 carts when I clocked in. Luckily there are two of us but I work at a huge store and withou a MyDevice I'm lost completely.

ASANTS. Our LODs would not be happy if hardlines didn't check in when they got there and just started working on something. They usually always have a plan and are waiting for you to start so they can have you work on that.

We could probably have an overnight (zero guests) with 30 team members each working 8 hours on the sales floor and still find stuff to do. Find someone with a walkie and ask the LOD what to do.

If you work salesfloor, you need to locate the LOD or TL in order to report in and figure out what area you need to work. And what assignments need to be done.

If there no walkies available, then find one. Go to GS or operator have them walkie the LOD or TL for you.

This time of year, you might end up just doing abandons/reshop.

We could've used your help in electronics yesterday. We had about 6 carts of push in our tiny electronics stockroom, the majority of which consisted of movies.

I would use the target app on my phone if There were no nude ices available. At least it would give me a basic idea where an item was. You can always find a location on the registers. I'm not there anymore and don't remember which button will get you there.

I don't think there was ever a time where I had nothing to do, but then again I would always find something to do so I wasn't standing around.

There is always straightening, dusting and cleaning. If a manager has an agenda for you, they will let you know. If your managers aren't letting you know what needs to be done then they aren't being the wardens that target wants them to be.
