I really think we could see the end of Target or at least a downward spiral. The security breach of people's credit card/debit card information has had an effect on the company in my opinion. I'm not an idiot or a rookie. I know that January is one of the slowest months of the year in retail and at Target but the store I work at just seems a lot slower and the red card counts seem a lot down. Yeah, the weekends are still busy but that's common sense. The majority of the shopping is done on the weekends. I just have this feeling that we haven't even seen all of the effects of the security breach. I think that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Personally, I would not care that much if Target went bankrupt and eventually out of business because I despise working for the company. If you like working for Target, that's fine. I won't judge you or hold that against you. If you like it, I give you props. It's just not my thing. Yeah, I think it's possible that the end of Target is near but it could just be that I work at a crappy store or one of the worst in my state. I just think that people are going to be cautious about shopping at Target. When the security breach happened, I didn't think it was that big of a deal because it the number affected was only about 30 to 40 million. However, that number changed into 70 million and then eventually wound up to be 110 million. 110 million is almost 4 times the population of Canada, LMAO. Sales are basically relied upon humans entering the store and buying crap. If fewer humans and fewer humans shop at Target, sales go down. If you work at Target, you know what that means. Bosses don't get their raises and they get mad and take it out on their pawns(regular team members).

Well that's a little apocalyptic.

TJ Maxx and Marshalls were hit by this in 2006. They're still around.

True but let's be honest, TJ Maxx and Marshalls are spares compared to Target and Wal Mart. You really think 110 million human beings that are mad about their information being breached won't at least put a dent into Target?

I don't think it will because in the end people buy things based on their aspirations. They have a want and/or a need to purchase something in hope of achieving something with it. I smile with wisdom and am content that the world isn't perfect because naturally we're flawed because we want so much more, but in the end we get these things and wish for what we had.

Spot will be ok. Sign up for the protection service, if you are unsure about your credit stuff. It's free for a year. My concern is on this mess is, did the bad guys figured out how to break into the computer access gateway into the bank via spot credit/debit system?

Been at Target for over 5 years at 3 different stores and have never seen it this slow. We have been scheduled 2 closers for hardlines, 3 softlines and 1 electronics and still have been able to zone the store and finish reshop by hour after close. It is a ghost town after 8:00. Target needs to clean house at the top and launch major PR commercials, instead of running these stupid "Everyday Collection" ads. Somebody out there being open and honest about what happened and what is going on now. Gregg's interview to CNBC did nothing to help and has a very small demographic. Most people are pissed about the lack of communication from the company, not the hack. Now is not the time to slash hours and give people a worse shopping experience.

The numbers of people you're stating sound pretty normal for a weekday closing January-Feburary at my store (and we're a Super), plus an operator and 1-3 grocery closers, depending. The zone isn't horrible, but that's in part because of fewer shoppers. Finally, we have no time to do bounce-back. I'm sure we had a visit this week and I'm sure we got harassed about the lack of scrubbing and dusting we've been doing.

We often see posts that ask why people choose to work longterm at Target or tell us that "it's fine" as though we are some sort of mindless being incapable of making rational decisions. I want to know why people like the OP that "despise working for the company" don't just GET OUT! Find a job that you DO like. Your "crappy store" is probably full of tm's that feel the same way. There just might be a correlation between the two.

Here's the thing, this particular event is not going to take out Spot.
Target is going to be around in one form or another for a quite a while.
A company this big takes a long time to die but unless the people at the top start making better decisions the long term prognoses isn't good.

Now I'm not an expert on the subject but I have worked for a couple of major corporations that went down the drain and a whole bunch of small companies where I came to work only to find the doors locked.
Cutting staff in the positions that interact with the customers, giving the bosses golden parachutes, expanding too quickly and rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
All very bad signs.

I can see Target dying out in its current incarnation 20 or 30 years from now due to the internet, demographic shifts, etc. But who knows what technology and the economy will bring during that time.

I know it's only one store prototype and a few Citys but I can see TargetExpress and CityTarget becoming a large portion of Target's revenue as people move in back to the cities. It may not be as big as I make it out to be but I believe it is plausible.

Ours close at 10 as well except for during most of December.

The store I worked at closes at 11. Funny story. There are two other Target stores on the same road just much further away and they close at 10. Weird.

10 pm from Monday thru Saturday here and 9 pm on Sundays.... Only time it changes is during the holiday season after Black Friday and on up till Christmas Day... this year a couple days past...

The store I work at just seems a lot slower. I worked today and it just seemed really slow for a Saturday. I think people are scared to shop at Target because of the security breach. Yes, some people will continue to shop at Target because they want to buy crap and are willing to take risks. However, I think the hardcore shoppers will be scared and shop elsewhere. I may have been too bold with saying that Target will go out of business but I definitely think this security breach will have damaging long term effects on stores.

Our STL said it took TJ MAXX 75 days to get back to normal...So, only time will tell. But I really doubt it's the end of Target.

You've got to look at the big picture. This will have been meaningless. The average consumer is ignorant or doesn't care. Did they care about all the negative publicity Wal-Mart got for selling cheap chinese crap, exploitation, outsourcing, and driving away mom and pop shops from every small town? CVS is doing this in Miami. A CVS is literally on the corner of every block now. Every other corner that isn't is a Walgreens. Some people understand this and have kept Wal-Mart from Miami Miami, but it is inevitable. Value always wins, especially in these hard economic times. Who cares about quality and service if they see it as overpriced?

They just go where the price is right. And you can't blame them. Small businesses will have to innovate and over-achieve. No more mediocrity. Things are slow everywhere. It is a result of the economy and worthless economic policies. I am a strong believer in capitalism, but capitalism in this country is being neutered. But this isn't just exclusive to the United States. It's happening across the world.

I don't believe in the 1% 99% socialist bull. Crony capitalism and socialism creeping into capitalism is the problem. Yeah tin foil hat. NWO. Deep down you know it's true.
