Hey guys. I was recently hired as a hardlines team member. I finished my 2 weeks of training and today was my first long shift. I am so tired. Props to anyone who consistently works long shifts.

I'm still trying to get some things approved, like days off and a change in my availability. It's proving to be difficult and the uppers at my store don't approve anything when I ask, so I will have to bother them a lot. Other than that and a few annoying customers, my day went pretty well. Looking forward to a good rest of the week.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that they have me working 2:30 - 11 on 4th of July. 🙁 Pray for me.

If you don't mind working Holidays, that's actually really good news. Time and a half pay...assuming that you were hired in at $9/hour you're looking at around $120 for one day. Sadly, I'm not able to work that day, otherwise I would be thrilled. 🙁

I actually get paid $9.50/hour, so I'll be making more than that I guess. I didn't get know we get time and a half for 4th of July. I guess that makes it a bit better, but I'm still not looking forward to it lol. If you worked at my store, I'd totally give you my shift.

Yep, all Nationally-recognized holidays receive time and a half at Target. I wish I could pick up your shift...but I'm only Cashier-trained 🙁 Maybe I'll change that soon though. 🙂

You probably won't be able to change your availability until after your first 90 days.

When I was hired, I had to sign a page with my availability and a statement saying that it was correct and that I would not be allowed to change it for my first 90 days.

Welcome!
You did tell your mgt at the interview about certain days off? No changes to availabity can be done within first 90 days, @SFSFun was correct. Retail is not an easy job. Wait till you see the schedules for the next few weeks. You may get have 1 shift for 4 hours for the whole week.

The only thing that sucks about the 4th is if your store parking lot is used for firework watching. Prior to the last hour before closing, its dead. Then last hour its a total bum rush for everything. People completely bum rush Food Ave for hotdogs, snacks and drinks. Market gets tossed right before close after a perfect zone.

Just wait till Christmas and the blackout leave completely. And they cram a 12hr Black Thanksgiving opening, off 8, and back for another 8.

Actually this is incorrect. I was able to change my availability through eHR to compensate for me being out of school. Therefore I had a more open schedule. I think that if you make your schedule more open, they will approve it.

The op didn't mention they were in school. Just they need a July 4th off & inflexible schedule.

Sorry for not giving enough detail. When I interviewed for the position, I told the 3 people that interviewed me that I had a week-long vacation scheduled in July. They said it was fine. I did the time-off request yesterday but it was auto-denied so I need to do it again today and make sure it's approved this time. They can't say anything to me because they knew about this vacation before I was even hired. The 4th of July thing was just me complaining that I will be working such a long shift on a busy day lol. I'm not trying to get it off.

In regards to my availability, I was actually able to change it already but I'm trying to tweak it a bit (I would prefer to have my days off in a row and would prefer to work closing shifts because it's easier for me to get to work in the late afternoon than in the morning/early afternoon). If it doesn't get approved, it's not a problem, I'll just suck it up and deal with it.

Speaking of school, I'll be going back to school before my 90 days are up (I also told them about this). I think I will have worked something like 70 - 80 days by the time school starts for me again, so hopefully they will allow me to change my availability by that point. If not, then I will just put in my 2 weeks when that time comes lol. School is more important than me working at Target.

They have scheduled me often for the first 2 weeks following training. We will see if what you said happens in the future though. I don't need the money THAT bad, so I wouldn't mind only being scheduled for one day a week.

What is your advice on putting shifts on the swap board and time-off requests that are only for one day? While my availability is relatively open, that doesn't mean that I don't have a life and won't have things come up. If I'm under my 90 days, can they terminate me if I do either of those things too often?

@Hardlines9 Seriously. If you can afford school without working at Target, do that. At the very least, do not let Target interfere with your classes anymore than any other part time job might. I've done well at Target, but I wish I would've placed more priority in school. I got suckered into full time hours and specialist/TL positions by the pay. I ended up having to drop classes a few semesters and not take as many classes so as to be able to work. I'm finally graduating this summer, but I should've graduated something like 4 years ago!

I'm not doing anything school-related this summer, so I have the time to work. Trust me, I was unemployed last summer and even though I enjoyed all the free time, I didn't enjoy not having money lol. So I don't mind working. I don't need the money THAT bad because I already have a part-time job that I can do remotely from home, but it doesn't pay much and I would rather have an additional paycheck coming in. I definitely won't let Target get in the way of school when school starts up again though.
