So I'm pretty new, also new to this website, and I need to vent what I hate so far.

-People who claim an item was priced waaayyy differently than it really was, and get mad you won't change it to be 75% off or nearly free... even when someone price checks and confirms they're wrong.

-When you fix an item to be the price they said it was, yet it still isn't enough. A lady the other day had a $189 item that was on sale, and she was demanding we give it to her for $28. When he request was denied, she called us names. Ok lady.

-Having to ID everyone regardless of age for wine, beer, etc. Seriously, I've had about 4 people yell at me and get offended I asked. One lady's husband SCREAMED at me and called me names, saying I was stupid for asking. I explained it was a rule, and I have to ask for alcoholic purchases, and he was like "sure it is", while refusing to give an age or show ID. Just... why are you so angry.

-The extra large bags. They never easily pull apart. EVER.

-Just people in general.

#3: Back when I worked at a liquor store, these were the people who didn't get any booze. We had the card everyone regardless of age policy there, which was an issue in a tourist dominated area where tons of Europeans, Canadians, and Australians aren't carrying IDs or even considering they might be carded. Now, we just had to type a birthdate in, and if someone was clearly middle aged (California state law is card under 40), I could be understanding and make something up (DON'T do this at Target. I hear they will catch you and fire you.). You want to yell at me or be an asshole about it? Well, then, I'm following policy to the letter. That was one of the few times I could outright refuse service to assholes and get away with it, after all.

Yeah, I don't get why people get so angry. It's just a rule. I say "I'm sorry, I know it might seem silly, but I don't make the rules." OR they'll be like "No other store does this, why are you asking me? That's personal!" It's just like... stop.. I do not care how old you are, I just am following the rules. Same for medicine, if I tell them I need to enter their birthdate sometimes I'll get attitude. I honestly think it's a stupid rule though

After getting yelled at too often for carding guests, I'd simply tell 'em to write their congressman because I don't make the laws.
When they'd gripe about my refusal to just 'key in any date', I'd tell them their inconvenience isn't worth my job.

Guests who get a little angry about the ID thing usually calm down when I tell them that I have to scan the card because I'm not allowed to key in birthdates anymore. When I explain that the system won't let me bypass it in spite of their clearly over 21 age, they seem to take it a little better than just "We do it to everyone"

Alternatively, a 70-year-old lady gleefully handed me her ID today after I asked for it. She said she loved when we asked because it made her feel younger than she was aha

Had about 2 people get angry over it today. One man said "Do you see my grey hair? CLEARLY I'M OLD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!" I thought he was joking but he was serious. I was explaining it was just a rule, and he wasn't having it. His wife tried calming him down. It was so stupid

I don’t understand why anyone would get mad about it. 1. It’s the law and common knowledge you need to present ID when buying alcohol and 2. It takes like 3 seconds to do

This occasionaly comes up for certain mature videos games. Comes in handy though...some parents have no clue what they are buying their young children.

I also like to make sure to mention that the game is mature rated when they mention they are getting the game for their kid.

There's been a few times a guest has changed their mind after I tell them that the copy of GTA 5 they're getting for 8 year old Billy has a lot of foul language and some nudity.

Don't get me wrong, your money your kid IDGAF what you buy them- But I like to educate people who might not be paying enough attention to what they are getting for their kids.

You can't bypass it at your store? We can type them in, at least with video games. With the number of foreign tourists I get, it'd be a nightmare if I couldn't.

Nope, if we try to bypass it at my store it requires a supervisor override.

I'm no longer nice to these people. Look you either hand over ID or you just not drinking tonight. Target as a company do that so they won't run into any law suits and it's reasonable.

They usually stare at me like I'm supposed to be scared or something

I do disagree with the ID for cold medicine though. There have been a couple of times I wasn't home and my husband was sick enough to be in bed with a fever, yet when my daughter walked to a nearby store for cold medicine the place refused to sell it to her. Why should my sick husband have to leave the bed, get dressed, and then go to the store himself for the OTC stuff when he's so sick he needs the stuff?

It's a safety issue. Kids have been known to abuse cough medicine. And it does have a small amount of alcohol in it.

If your husband is sick he can wait for you a friend or a neighbor to pick some up for him

You've clearly never had a job where leaving before the local pharmacy opens and making it home after the local pharmacy closes is the norm. And I find it highly, highly hard to believe that a 17 year old is going to abuse it but an 18 year old won't. And who talks to neighbors anymore? The times of borrowing a cup of sugar are long gone.

With your 17/18 logic why don't we just lower the age of consent, age you can buy cigarettes and allow your 17 year old to sign up for the military without your permission. 18 is the age we as a society have decided someone is old enough to make their own decisions.(except drink, thats another story) if they made exceptions for 17 year olds someone would want an exception for a 16 year old.

Cough medicine can be bought at a local store. You don't need to be within pharmacy hours to buy Nyquil.

Just because something is an inconvenience to you doessnt mean the law should be changed.

I talk to my neighbors all the time. It's not about borrowing sugar but you can bet I borrow a ladder and if a package is missing off their porch I let them know if I saw something suspicious

You don't need to be within pharmacy hours, but you do need to be 18 per current laws.

And I don't know any of my neighbors well enough to ask them to go buy Nyquil for my spouse because I'm at work and can't do so myself.

My daughter was 19 at the time. She just didn't own ID at that point in time, which is why they didn't sell it to her. I still find it ridiculous that a minor can legally ingest the medicine without needing a doctor's approval but cannot buy something they can legally consume. At least with alcohol and cigarettes they can't use it so the law makes sense. They can legally take NyQuil, so why can't they buy it?

I am pretty sure there is no state or federal law requiring you to be 18 for the various cold medicines and many of the other items that Target requires you to be 18. Maybe some states do but certainly not mine. Its Target's policy, nothing more. At one point they required you to be 18 to purchase lighters that they sell on the front lanes. I have seen brand and up and up with the same medicine but one might require the birth date and the other doesn't. Target has decided not to sell those items to individuals under 18. If someone doesn't have an ID, you can call over a supervisor and they can use their discretion if they believe the person is old enough. I would imagine Target's policy is based on a belief that they may be sued by the parents of a child under 18 who overdosed or abused taking certain medicines, or ingested non medicines like rubber glue or spray paint. I know in my state sparklers and pop it's have an age restriction of 16 but Target requires 18. It is what it is. If you disagree with Target's policies post on social media as a guest (not employee) or write a letter or comment card.

This is from 2012, because I'm lazy and it happened to be the first hit. A quick scroll shows at least 29 states represented, most of which specifically identify ephedrine (which used to be in certain dietary aids like Fen-Phen and is also in bronchodilator medications like Bronkaid and certain formulations of Mucinex) and pseudoephedrine (the "good" version of Sudafed, a popular and very effective decongestant) and some with even broader restrictions. http://www.namsdl.org/library/80BD2CD6-1C23-D4F9-746BA81987602693/

And here's a news article from earlier this year from Oregon . Fourteen states are specifically listed as having laws preventing sales of dextromethorphan - the main ingredient in many cough/cold medications - to anyone under 18. Oregon passes DXM age restriction law - http://www.drugstorenews.com/article/oregon-passes-dxm-age-restriction-law

My state requires you to be 17 to purchase mature content (video games, porn, etc), 18 to purchase tobacco/certain medications/paint & other chemicals & 21 to purchase alcohol.

So much complaining.

A lot of it isn’t corporate policy as it is state law. Write to you congress people or something if you don’t agree. Don’t vote for that person next time or something.

As for the corporate policy, just shop else where. Don’t like the policy? There are plenty locations to shop at.

I don’t get why people get so hung up on goofy stuff like this. I had to buy my 59 year-old dad beer at a ball game because he didn’t have his ID. Boo hoo.
