So last night I was working at Guest Service and I had a guest come over wanting to do a Price Match on Mucinex for 9.99 from Target.com, no problem. Well I was checking him out for his other items and I noticed he had two coupons for Mucinex.

Basically, one was a manufacture coupon for 7 dollars off. The other one was a Target coupon for a 1.00 off. I had my GSTL come over to verify it was okay and he said there was none so I went ahead and did so.

Well because I did the price match, it ended up being .99.

I just wanted to get your opinion on this cause it still doesn't seem right to me and secondly, is there a thread about coupon policies on here that someone could provide a link for?
 
Target stores coupon policy
Manufacturer and Target Coupons:•Target accepts one Manufacturer Coupon and one Target Coupon for the same item (unless prohibited by either coupon).
•We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or limit the use of any coupon.
•Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).
•All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier during checkout.
•Item purchased must match the coupon description (brand, size, quantity, color, flavor, etc.).
•Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
•We can't give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
•All applicable sales taxes are paid by the guest at the full value of the item.
•These guidelines apply to all coupons accepted at Target (Color Checkout Coupons, Internet Coupons, •Mobile Coupons, Mailed Coupons, Coupons from Newspapers and Magazines, etc.).

Internet (Print-at-Home) Coupons:
•We gladly accept valid internet coupons that contain a clear and scannable bar code.
•We do not accept internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.

Mobile Coupons:•Guests can receive Target Mobile Coupons by signing up for Text Alerts at Target.com/mobile or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET).
•Message and data rates may apply. See site for full details.
•To redeem, simply show your coupon barcode to the cashier. With one simple scan, all applicable coupons are applied.

Category/Department and Storewide Coupons:•If redeeming more than one category/department or storewide coupon, you must meet the purchase requirements for each coupon individually.
•If redeeming a category/department coupon plus a storewide coupon, you must meet the purchase requirements for each coupon individually.
•Percent off coupons will apply to all qualifying items in the transaction. No other same category/department or storewide coupon will apply.

Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):•BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
•A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
•If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon may be used on the first item.
•If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.

Returns:•Returns of items purchased using Manufacturer Coupons may receive coupon value returned in the form of a Target GiftCard.

Exclusions:•Coupons are void if copied, scanned, transferred, purchased, sold, prohibited by law, or appear altered in any way.
•We regularly monitor the Coupon Information Corporation (CIC) website for counterfeit coupons. We do not accept counterfeit coupons.
•We do not accept mobile versions of Manufacturer Coupons.
•We can't accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
•Some items may not be available at all stores.
•We do not accept expired coupons.
•We do not accept Canadian coupons in our US stores.


Can I use a coupon when price matching?
A guest can use coupons when price matching per Target's normal coupon policy. When the guest presents a coupon(s), these steps will be followed:

  • Manufacturer coupons: manufacturer coupons will be applied after the price match is made.
  • Target and Cartwheel coupons: Target and Cartwheel coupons will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target and Cartwheel coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor's price.
  • Combining both Target, Cartwheel and manufacturer coupons: the Target and Cartwheel coupons will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target and Cartwheel coupons have been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor's price. Once the price match is made the manufacturer coupon will be applied.
  • Reminder: we accept one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item unless either coupon prohibits it. Target does not ad match a competitor’s coupon-required offers.



That is Target's coupon policy to the letter, as well as the portion of Target's Price Match policy in regards to coupons.

You did technically give them an extra $1 off, as the Target Coupon should have been applied BEFORE the price adjustment.

As a GSA, as long as the item was the correct size/count, and met all other requirements for both coupons and price adjustment, I would have let it gone through.

An additional note... I had a guest present me with a manufacturer's coupon that gave her a free 10 pound box of hamburger patties (roughly $12). There was no additional stipulation; nothing else was required to get it. The guest told me she fills out online surveys to get these type of coupons. I was curious where such a deal originated, as it seemed a red flag to me.

Usually, those coupons will have a hologram or other recognizable symbol if they're legit, as they would come directly from the manufacturer. If it's a printed web coupon with no additional purchase requirements, we can't accept it (as per the coupon policy).

I've done surveys like that so there is a good chance it's real.

I adore it. Again, as a GSA; it allows me to make those extreme coupon users less inclined to come into my store. Thus, no more having multiple full reshop carts of HBA every night. But, to each their own.

Same here. It makes it impossible to train the cashiers properly. It ends up being "if someone has more than one coupon put on your blinker and Jill will come take care of it."

How is preventing $140,000 in theft a waste of police time?

How is it any different than me coming into your home and stealing everything you own? (Aside from the fact that your shit won't amount to anywhere near $140,000)
 
The police should be doing the war on drugs not firevilious things with coupon fraud.

Crime is crime. Police are there to enforce all of the laws. Six figures worth of coupon fraud is not frivolous. Yes, enforcing the drug laws is important, but enforcing other laws is just as important. These fraudsters are stealing. The cops are the ones who can arrest them. The penalties for theft get stiffer as the dollar amount involved gets larger.
Someone needs to stop coupon fraud. Otherwise, companies won't offer coupons anymore and honest coupon users will lose out. With large dollar amounts like that, the cops and the court system should definitely get involved.
 
Coupon fraud is a serious issue. People who misuse coupons or commit coupon fraud are likely involved in other illegal activities too. Like @DotWarner said, legit coupon users will lose out. Stores are tightening their coupon policies and manufacturers are decreasing coupon values (or not releasing any coupons at all).

Penalties for coupon fraud have been as extreme as a 17 year prison sentence and a $5 million fine.
