Hi everyone! I've always wondered how switching pay grades in the down direction works. Say you're a N09 and want to move to a position that's N07, will you lose anything if you're nowhere near the cap? Is it a predetermined change or is up to the management of your store? Thanks in advance guys.

a starting pay n9 will move to the starting pay n7 if demoting. I'm not sure how yearly raises are factored into that since they are a percentage of your starting salary. Why are you thinking about demoting?

It's actually a friend of mine and they happen to be a "specialist". They want to switch over to pharm and were told they may have to become a pharm team member (which means N07). I was concerned about the pay situation and by your response, it should be a concern.

When you demote, it goes down to a lower paygrade. But, in pharmacy, is your best bet. Just all guests, out by 9pm, no real politics.

I know the lower paygrade would take effect, I just wanted to know how the actual dollars and cents work out. Anyone else?

I was a shoe specialist when our store first opened and after a number of issues I became a cashier.

When I started as a cashier my hourly rate was decreased by one dollar an hour.

A TM at our store was a GSA and was missing a lot of work due to health issues. She says that she was "demoted"; however her hourly rate remains the same as when she was a GSA. I'm guessing that her hourly rate didn't change because of concerns about how things looked.....store management probably didn't want it to look like she was removed from GSA due to health issues and missing a lot of time. She now works in a number of different positions and I can't imagine that all the positions have the GSA hourly rate.

GSA paygrade (N07) isn't as high as many think. Its only base pay (N03) +$.50

Besides Cashier and Cart Attendant (N03), most other work centers are N07 I think... I know Photo Lab Assistant is N07 for sure.

N09 is +$1.00 i think, not sure about after that

I assume it's still $1 to go from N03 to N09, I know it's still $2 to go from N09 to N13.

Had you received a raise yet, or were you just at starting pay?

And thank you everyone for helping me by sharing your stories!

Hmm, this is all very interesting. It seems that its a situational dependent decision, which means it isn't necessarily automatic.

Your pay is tied to your job code... So if they remember to switch your title your pay will adjust along that! So going from PG9 to 7 you would lose 50 cents! However, some people can make the transition slowly (pick up one shift a week for a while, then two, then three...) sometimes can sneak by the system and keep their old job code :) That is how alot of people I know are doing PG3 or 5 work, but still keyed in as PG7 :)

And neither got/will get a raise for the rest of their time at Target. If you demote and you don't take a pay cut, you're automatically capped. That happened to a TM at my old store.

Not so in this case. I actually didn't believe one of the people in question, and they showed me their review. Said team member was making $17+/hour, as a TL, voluntarily demoted due to family issues, and kept the same pay.

The only thing was, we both got the same review "EX", however, the percentage of the raise was different. I got a larger raise than they did.

EX and O always get raises. If you're capped, it's a lot less though.

There is this backroom day team member who is unhappy and doesnt get along with our ETL LOG. Since he doenst get along with the ETL LOG, he often takes hardlines shifts. He was recently told he would be making the switch to hardlines from backroom. Now he told me his pay (PG7) will stay the same because it is against the law for target to change your pay rate if you switch positions. I mean he is going from PG3 to PG7. Last year when i switched from hardlines to backroom day, I recieved a .50 cent raise.

I assume he will loose .50 cents if they change his work center in the system?

From my understanding, someone has to change his paygrade....if no one does, then he keeps it. Although maybe in your state that is a law? I can't imagine that, though.

My change in status from "shoe specialist" was a downward slide. Most Tms had gotten raises shortly after our store opened because they realized that the pay at our store wasn't very competitive with other retailers in the area.

My status change was supervised by a interventionist that I had called from the mental health center that I go to. I think that the dollar reduction for me was wrong, but that's what they did.
The HR and the LOD of softlines weren't very nice to me. I think they wanted to sound generous by offering me the chance to be a cashier.....eventhough we usually don't offer positions to someone on corrective action.

I don't know how much I was really supposed to give up, I'm just thankful that I had an outside influence there to help me out.

Re: shift changes.

In my store the shift that goes in at 3am gets a .50 differential because they choose to work the overnight hours.
Many businesses will offer a shift differential...places with three workshifts a day. The overnight time people will often get several dollars of differential pay....the differential pay is usually enough for people to work that time. So, when a worker goes to a more traditional workshift (day hours) they lose the differential.......but people know that the pay will change if they choose to go to the day shift.

Manufacturing companies and car makers are good examples of situations where a differential is used to lure people to the less desirable hours.

Well, I'm really sorry to hear you ran into such problems, but I hope you're enjoying cashiering a lot more! (From the looks of your sig, you are)

Yes, I do love cashiering. It's fun and my day flies right on by.
It also helps that I've been a cashier for a few years now and there are a number of guests that I know just from being at Target.
I love the interaction I have with the guests.

The only things I would change are more hours each week and perhaps $2.00 more an hour.

I know that the $2.00 is a dream....and the hours vary too much. Unless I keep complaining on a real regular basis I don't get more than 25 hours a week. Target is my only source of income and I'm discovering that it is too hard to pay my bills. So, I'm struggling with the issue of looking for another job and leaving Target.

Demotion

ooops!
