Archived Register asked for ID when making a return WITH a receipt...

Today I was working at guest services, and when a guest was making a return WITH a receipt, the register prompted me to scan her ID. I thought this was the weirdest thing and I had never encountered that before. Has anyone else ever had this come up?
 
This has happened to me, once when the items were paid using a credit card and once when the items were paid using a merchandise return card. One of them truly seemed sketchy and the person actually didn’t have an ID with them so thankfully I wasn’t able to do the return, the other was perfectly fine and the guest was happy to give me her ID and it went through so idk?
 
Well anything that was done with a check or merch card can prompt for ID. idk why credit card would but I guess it’s just the system flagging it. I wish it would do that for coupon scammers just to scare them a little :)
 
If its a high dollar item or entire purchase, or a purchase made with a check and immediate return.

A return done same day or different store.
