Hey everyone, SL TM here! I am all but officially the new Shoe person at my Target. Shoes is pretty knarly, but I'm ok with it. However our last two Shoe TMs didnt last, the most recent literally NCNS her way out. Said she was pressured and overwhelmed. Claimed she even talked to our TL's and ETL and nothing changed. Aiside from how she left, I thought she was a good, hard worker. So, for those of you who are Shoes or were, do you have tips or insight into keeping a shred of sanity? (Or if this even is possible?) Thanks!

Shoes will literally drive a person insane. I don't know how many very good TMs I've known, get the position and then in a few months upright and quit. To keep your sanity, transfer to a new role ASAP. Sorry for the pessimism, but good luck and remember we are here on TBR when you need to vent!

It’s true, every word. I saw that happen many times in a previous job. The shoe dept. was right by the door, and the joke of the store when someone was transferred to shoes was “yeah, they’re sending so-and-so closer to the door”, and most people ended up going out it. On the bright side, there was one guy who it didn’t bother, and he had a long successful career in shoes. Good luck, maybe you will be like him.🍀

Apperciate the honesty.

I feel stupid saying it, but I OFFERED to take the department. I think it was just the knowing I'd "own" something. Have an area I can make something of. I love detail work and a small area. But I wont say im not worried: Im definitely not getting things sugar coated. I'll just do my best and hope I escape the fate of so many others.

If your leadership allows you to focus on shoes, it isn't actually a bad department. It's when they expect you to do miracles in shoes as well as x,y,and z in other departments that it gets insanely stupid and stressful. I was a shoe specialist back in the day when such titles existed and when they left me in shoes and left me the hell alone I loved it and our shoe dept had high sales and shined and was widely complimented. I'd take shoes again in a heartbeat IF they guaranteed they would allow me to focus ONLY on shoes. ;)

Exactly. Up until 2 weeks ago I did shoes. I was given any and all hrs needed to do the job. That was my problem. I had to do softline detrashing first. Many days I did not get to shoes till 10:30. I always stayed and got it done, cause they knew I would. I was working way more hours than I wanted to. A great zone is the be all and end all to shoes. Zone first, then push. If you have leadership support and open hours, shoes is a great place to be.

Shoes is a beast! I like it, but I'm weird and like puzzles. The problem is everyone else who just shove the boxes anywhere when they zone at night bc they don't care.

This is very true! tm's love to complain about the guests plowing through shoes (and it can often be quiet horrible) but when the truck push can't even bother about backstocking...your being sabotaged by your own! Then closers. I had a not-that-new tm ask "what's the point of pulling boxes forward?"like it was just too much to ask and they'd rather just pickup and call it a night.

Shoes is a beast...when it's allowed to become one.
