Target’s Vision

Must be a store thing because I don't remember cakes celebrating birthdays. BBQ were usually reserved for the "summer" holidays, treats were only given during the holiday rush and something special (ie, pizza, subs, chicken) was served on Christmas and Thanksgiving eves.
We still had multiple days of food brought in for Thanksgiving weekend and the weekends just before Christmas last year. Maybe Dec. 26 also. And there's usually pizza for TMs who work inventory.
But we used to have food for no special reason when we had a different leadership team. Sometimes, it was just bagels or donuts. We had one TL who liked to do a taco bar for everyone. It's been years.
Also, we've had gift card drawings for TMs who don't miss any shifts or show up late during certain weeks of fourth quarter. Don't think that's happened for a while either.

To chime in, my store didn't exist during the "good days" but things have really taken a turn here too. On the subject of recognition and rewards, that is ALL gone. We used to do monthly drawings to see who the "top dog" of the store is (performance related) and that person would get a bag full of good stuff and target swag (I have several bullseye plushies because of that). We also used to do a reward for every person who didn't call out once during the entire month and while that was much smaller, it was still nice - that's gone too. We would almost always get food catered during special occasions like holidays and black Friday - not anymore! We're not even allowed to buy food for the whole team anymore is the crazy part. With recognition being gone, they don't even say thank you to certain TMs who carry departments like they used to at my store. It's literally just show up, get yelled at, barely make the unrealistic expectations and then go home. Don't even get me started on how many hours have been cut lately yet nearly EVERY time off request is getting denied. So y'all don't have payroll but also don't want to save money considering we have more than enough TMs to go around to cover?? Make it make sense.

Told in the morning must leave at scheduled time. Getting ready to leave now they want you to stay longer.

I kinda miss team huddles. Talk about new/goals, give recognition (forcing everyone one by one to give recognition was dumb though and wasted time). They did a Target trivia question and the first correct answer got something (candy/snack, target swag sometimes). At least you got to see most people once or twice daily, built more of a sense of teamwork.

Yeah, TLs at my store are announcing on the walkie before store opening and individually asking TMs who start after the store opens if anyone wants to leave early has become commonplace the last couple weeks. Not replacing hours if TMs call off. Shoved out the door at scheduled out time.

Not sure where this is coming from because a TL just announced over walkie maybe 3 weeks ago that our sales are up so there are more hours to be handed around. And I did have 3-4 hours more per week for a little bit there. Now hours are being cut even shorter than they were before.

I don't get this either. My store crushes our sales goals and comps almost daily yet there's somehow no payroll? Same thing company-wide too - how are some stores doing great (not all) yet there's no money anywhere??

See that sounds fun! Our huddles didn't force recognition but TMs would often just say nice things on their own accord. We'd also always talk about who's anniversary and birthdays were upcoming and those people always got a treat or target swag for it

Nooooooo lol. Never did like them. Some of ours ended with everyone jumping in to help any department but Style put away their reshop. Meanwhile Soflines was trashed. Hard pass.

@happygoth They were called “Smart” Huddles back then. Years ago when I was a TL, we had used them to “help” a lower performing Department. (Home Decor, Babies, Market, Pfresh). They just seemed to all out Stop, when I returned to Target 🎯. Huddles still happen. Now it’s a “When we feel like it” kinda thing.

Our day team still does smart huddles as needed. We're a pretty well run store, so not needed very often, but shit happens sometimes.

Then there's how it seems like Target sort of cared about its people, but that's gone. A big sheet cake for all that month's birthdays, frequent treats in the break room, grilled burgers and hotdogs for holidays - I hired in on Flow and we were always hungry. 🙂 Not sure when it all went away, maybe it was when covid started, but if that was the reason, it's never come back.
In my store, those are very recent memories. I think it changed earlier this year (2025), not when COVID started five years ago. This might be a district-specific thing.

Anyone else wondering what is up post-Covid? It’s like we can’t get our feet back under us. Target used to have a clear goal, to be the retailer of choice for families, bringing joy for a fair price and clearly be a step up from the Dollar stores, Bargain, and WalMarts of the world. But lately, it seems like we can’t get out of our own way. Decisions are all over the place, constantly in the news (and not good news), and all changes seem to be reactive or following in everyone else’s footsteps. Why did we stop leading and start following? Target no longer interviews, at least on the Distribution side, we just hire whoever. There is no selection process, so of course turnover is rampant, causing extra workload for those of us that stuck around through the years. Managers are never on the same page, not even those that run the same teams. The only time you see senior leadership or HR on the floor it’s never good news, and recent business decisions seem to always screw us workers and make our lives more difficult. It no longer feels like Target is a leading employer in our community based on new hiring practices and constant need for hiring due to so many exiting to other jobs. I used to be proud of working here, now I find myself never volunteering this info, which is sad.
Today's quarterly financial reports were not particularly encouraging. I'm posting the URL here, but will go into more discussion in a separate discussion thread.

Each store is given a budget for this (at least used to be) -- whether other HR's actually spent it on feeding the team seemed to vary.

Maybe they aren't this petty, but the denying time off thing just seems like 100% control and they like that. My SD would do this to people she doesn't like.

Never 👎🏾 understood that with Target 🎯. Deny someone time off. Then when they leave for greener pastures, Leadership is like “Why’d they leave??” Smh 🤦🏾‍♂️.

were yours required? we had them but busy people were permitted to skip them
100% required. One's name was called on the walkie relentlessly if one wasn't there. The leadership wanted to know what was so important that one couldn't come [to hear them pontificate]? And there was no other correct answer other than the building was on fire. If one didn't come evvveryone knew it and evvveryone asked the person why they had to go and the other person didn't.
