Hello everybody!

I was just curious as to if anyone has/had ever trained a TL in their days of being a TM?

Back when I was just a Team Member I applied for a GSTL position and one of the other applicants got the job over me. I was a little upset considering I was pretty much told I had it in the bag and in my eyes(yes biased towards myself), I had the biggest upside but that is behind me. The thing that really got me mad was that I worked a closing weekend and trained her 3 days in a row on that very busy closing weekend teaching her how to run the front. Everything from breaks/lunches, getting every closing task done, close the registers, and everything else that comes with the job. Why would they give the job to someone and then have them trained by someone they beat out? I was a little confused. This was a while back and I've become a GSTL since and I love working with her so theres no hard feelings, just want to know if anyone else has done this or seen this happen! Thanks for your stories!

Been there & did that too many times as a GSA before finally leaving the front end altogether.
Had so many go up the ladder past me that I had shoe prints on my shoulders.
I'd have thougt it was because I wasn't leader-"worthy" but why would I still be entrusted to train so many?

My thoughts exactly! It was crushing because I wanted to move up so badly and they just over looked me. I guess it's the way they do things around here! I won't ever have a TM of mine train a TL, seems counter productive.

When I was a Flow TM, we had an ETL from a nearby store who helped out while our ETL was on leave. He hired a new TL for his store and asked me to take her under my wing and teach her to be a leader.

Here's a story for you which explains Target's view of Team Leads: I mentioned what a great job X Team Leader was doing. In a huffy voice, my ETL responded, "Well, he's certainly not a LEADER; he's just mastered his tasks. I have no idea why he gets so much recognition or even why he was made a TL."

So it doesn't matter to Target if you are capable of completing the tasks involved in your work center. You must personify a LEADER. Whatever the eff that is. Yes, I know what the Leadership Expectations are, but IMO they are subjective and vague.

ETL Personification of a "Leader"? One who must rule from the swirly chair and subject their subordinates to fear to keep them in line. Any actual "tasks" can be delegated from the swirly chair.

lol I bet those same tasks the ETL would have no clue in doing and thinks everything is so easy to do in the store and is just effortless and takes no time

So, one of our TLs, who has been in the position about a month, is stuck covering some GSTL shifts while our GSTL is off for three weeks. The poor guy can barely do a return on his own...every time we've worked together, he's tossed the GSA keys at me and run the other direction...those have just been for a couple of hours in the morning. But he has actual 8 hour shifts coming up...I've been working with him on how to do returns, answer the phones, etc. I'm happy to assist him in anyway I can, but it's a bit obnoxious since he only backs up on cashiering every now and then, and he's being tossed into the deep end to try to tread water and hope the rest of us can save him.

I am a tm and have trained a specialist (when we still had them) who then was my superior. I have also trained a tl from another store. As I have no desire to EVER be a tl, I don't mind. If I had wanted to move up as others have said they did, I'd be royally, justifiably pissed.

The ETLs at my store think being a leader is calling out CAFS and reshop.

I could go into why I think this particular ETL said these things (maybe he thought the TL could improve on Personal or Team leadership?) but I am more concerned with why the ETL was discussing a TLs performance openly in the first place (unless you were an ETL at the time)

Said ETL is a moron and will never go farther in life than that position or a position that is equivalent at another company. All an ETL is, is an assistant store manager. Yes, assistant manager.

I really do not understand why 'executive' is even in the title other than to instill fear into TMs, bait people into applying for the ETL position, give the individual some screwed up sense of command, and string them along into being complacent with that $40k a year salary. It's like some financial companies that have over 600 'executive vice presidents'.

In my district the starting ETL salary was bumped up to $50k a year in 2012! That's 6 assistant store managers costing well over $300,000 a year before bonuses and benefits at my store. Now I see why the store TM's hrs have been cut so much!

I need a pay raise, please! We do at least 700k a week.

that's insane to me. These past two weeks have been incredibly slow and we're missing sales and we'll still have 700k a week. I would be so bored working at a lower volume store.
