I'm very curious about the cash office. Is that what they mean when they say "LOD, I'm ready for 239"? Also, what happens in the cash office. Does the GSA just count out money for the registers and then count and put the money back at the end of the night? Does the LOD have to be in the room with the GSA, or can s/he do it alone? Do you have to be a GSA to work in the cash office?

Just curious!

I dunno, but I've had to open the safe for an lod who couldn't do so once.. I had to pick my jaw off the floor

Pretty much anything money related goes through cash office. E.G. change from bank, cash deposits, checks, coupons. I believe since AE14 cash office is a gsa responsibility. They used to have cash office team members.

As the other threads will tell you, cash office:
-counts each register location daily (recording sales totals for Central Store Audit)
-sends excess currency off for deposit
-maintains coin & currency supply for store use (no, we DON'T sell you a roll of quarters to do your laundry)
-prepares start funds for registers needing to be rebanked
-counts the safe every day

Others will weigh in with additional duties but these are the basics.

Sure as hell will at my store, vibing with the guest and all that ;)

I never give out rolls of coins, but if a guest asks me to give them their change in all quarters, I'll do it as long as I have an adequate supply. I never understood why they don't make the machines so they accept dollar bills.

Now, to get back on topic...

If you have a walkie and a random non-Target worker asks you to radio the LOD to 239 in the late morning or early afternoon, that person is the bank courier. Some stores have a special walkie code for this, but most just say "LOD to 239."

Uhh, random? You mean big black guy with a gun on his hip :p

It's Guarda that picks up our cash, and there's nothing random about him, big, scary looking mofo.

You mean at night? If so that's a request the LOD bring out the bags, and the uhh...whatever the hell they call the drawer on wheels that all the money goes in :p

Lol our Dunbar guys aren't that intimidating. :D

I don't know what the proper name is, but many just call it The Beast.

During the day it's to pick up the deposit, drop off cash orders (boxes of coin, straps of lo-denom bills) or both.
It's always referred to as 239 since guests, et al hear the chatter over the walkies & they'd rather not have someone create a diversion so someone could get in.
They used to have APBPs go around to stores during the counting hr & knock to see if the COTMs (nee specialists) would follow protocols for unknowns.
Now they don't seem to care.
Re: cash cart?

Please don't WD40 the cash cart. It's supposed to be noisy and difficult to manage to prevent theft.

I was wondering if that was an option, but figured this was the case. DAMNIT!! It's so loud and obnoxious.

I doubt that matters. I don't think anyone in most stores would even try to stop someone from taking it. They'd just let them take it and call the cops.

Retail job isn't worth potentially getting shot over.

So what's the policy on this? Typically it's "let the robbers have what they want" but what if they steal the cash cart? Are we allowed to go after this?

When the GSA says they are ready for 239 at the very end of the night, it means the GSA is done closing all the registers. They have all the bags (with money) in the COW along with the change funds and are ready to put them in the safe in the Cash Office. Most stores do this part differently, but I am guessing your store has the GSA and LOD enter the Cash Office together and the LOD is supposed to verify all the bags are present along with the change funds and checks/sales audits. They place them all on the safe once verified and the GSA and LOD leave together and the LOD locks and arms. Best Practice is that a GSA must work in the Cash Office so they can access email and let the auditor know if there are discrepancies.

Why would you go after it and risk your life? I'm sure target has insurance that would cover that small amount of cash.

That was my point, I meant that it doesn't matter if they can push it quickly, because even if they can't I'm not risking my neck going after a would-be burglar.

When I worked for hd over 20 years ago, I worked the closing cashier shifts..I was always put in garden or contracting because I didn't have to call the head cashier over for every little item - made decisions on my own unless something was a big problem.. We were told, if someone wanted the money in the drawer, just open it and hand it to them.. Don't be a hero. I never had to do it, but had some shady characters come by a few times and I did hit the panic button for help...my heart pumped a few extra beats on those occasions.

Eh, what's shady exactly? I am assuming you mean behavior, and not appearance, but not sure what behavior would class as shady but not be attempted robbery.

We call our drawer Bertha. 'LOD I need 10 for Bertha'

If the cart is slow and noisy, it's a less likely target for a thief than a fast and quiet cart.

People want ten dollars in quaters.
