Nope, just got a cheap deal on DSL.
See how long husband makes it last.

If you have Time Warner Cable in your area, there offering a $14.99 a month internet plan for LIFE. It's a 2mb for sec connection, which, is slightly better than DSL. I was just shocked by the fact that there offering to lock in the price for life. I thought that was a very nice touch.

Believe it or not years ago, I didn't pay a dime for internet access. Yes. There were services that allowed you to get online for free, in exchange for a small advertising banner at the top of your screen. Although, almost all of those went belly up besides Netzero & Juno.

I really needed something, that wasn't going to stop working, suddenly, when I needed it, so I got AOL. It really wasn't bad when I used it. Most of the websites then, were mostly optimized for dialup users, and pages loaded very quickly for the most part. I paid $25 a month, for a decently speedy connection that allowed me to check my emails, and stay in touch with people at the time, plus it allowed me to skim through news headlines, and browse Yahoo.com so I could stay informed. I thought it was a wonderful service, at it's peak.

For Nostalgia ;)

That'd depend on the DSL, you can commonly get up to 12 mbps DSL, though as low as 768 kbps is also common.

NetZero is still around? That's old school. I remember those America Online CDs and how people would be like "free internet trial, sweet".

Yup, when we used Netzero it was usually late night to avoid the peak slowdowns/tying up the landline.
Don't miss that a bit.

When I used Dialup, I had this feature, on my AOL. That told me, if someone was calling so I could disconnect and answer it, or have it transfered to my cell phone. I thought it was the coolest thing at the time, but it really was just glorified call waiting, lol.

I went to the library the other day and used the internet for free. It was somewhat of a hassle but nice to use a computer at a desk instead of a laptop. And not having to worry about turning if off was sweet too. Just logged out and walked away.

My parents had a BBS service I used to dial in through Microsoft Works, it was called injersey or something. Remember posting my parents' phone number all over it (I was a weird 5-6 year old, what was I doing on the thing anyway?). Had AOL 2.5, then Prodigy, then GNN which got bought out by AOL. Got Comcast cable digital TV and internet in '99 or 2000 and it was the best thing ever. Illegal song downloads from Napster which took 30 to 40 minutes took 3, so amazing.

Now I pay $140/month for cable TV I rarely have time to watch and internet.

Fun fact: When I first got cable TV when I moved into my first apartment in 2008, the dude had to go through four cable boxes to get it to work. I didn't subscribe to DVR but I curiously pressed the button on the remote one day. It was enabled and filled with porn... titles like "College Sluts 2," etc. Stuff bought and recorded from the Playboy channel and the like. I could have complained but never did. They caught the free DVR mistake about a year or two later, sending me a letter basically saying "we won't charge you for all those months, but we will make you pay starting this month." Considering DVR is $15 a month I say that would have been their apology for the porn.

Dan. You need to find a local offer from Uverse or Fios offering what you have, and than call Comcast threatening to cancel. $140 is a lot, and no one should be paying that much.

Considering I personally know you play for our side ;) I would have complained. If anything, you probably could have received service, free for a very long time, lol.

I gotta ask, how many weird phone calls did you guys get? ;) lmao

Yeah, we have FIOS in my building now; I gotta switch. I got like 2 phone calls that I remember. They couldn't believe I was that young, although I remember I was actually 8. I remember putting "Hi. My name's Dan and I'm 8! Call me xxx xxx xxxx!"

Pffft. I don't have to make decisions like that. Thank goodness my girlfriend has a real job and makes real money, not the tiny-baby-dick paychecks I get.

When my family had dial-up through AOL, we had Callwave. If someone called the house, Callwave would take a message so they wouldn't get a busy signal.

At my library, the computers and network are slow, but our patrons appreciate that they can do their job applications and whatnot without having to go to a friend's house to use their computer.

Well you can always use free WiFi in public places like coffee shops and libraries. If you're addicted to online porn, you might have to make a sacrifice and maybe just buy some porno mags. Pretty sure, libraries don't want you looking at dat stuff on dare WiFi network.
But there are time limits at many of those places and if you are applying for a job, then have to take one of those damn assesment tests you can take your entire hour limit applying to only one job.

This. Or you could have ptsd and the computer is in what was a hallway in the historical home that was blocked by bookcases to make a computer nook so small the desk was custom made to fit...

I have a smartphone with unlimited data through sprint. I am lucky to live in the country but close enough to the nearest 4glte coverage city. My site also receives 4glte coverage. Hubby is chomping to get internet again, but not sure it's worth the cost for Comcast. Although using a full laptop screen would be nice. Maybe after we finish the office/craft room in the house we bought just this spring and have somewhere to stick a desk.

Cable is a total crapshoot, and generally unreliable if you live in a large apartment complex where everyone is sharing the same trunk line. I prefer DSL if I can, unless the cost and/or bandwidth offered is just miserable. I'm looking at you, Century Link.

Thankfully out where I live, we have FIOS, and my roommates and I are just paying 30 bucks a month (10 dollars each) for 20 megabits with no cap.
