I'd read through a thread that came up when I googled how to use Target for a ...."reference" but the thread wasn't very helpful, and neither is The Work Number website.

So I would like to put the number on my resume, so future employers can 'fact check'...but do I need to do anything other than put whatever the number is? Are there different numbers for different employers? Do I need to register myself? Am I already there!? When I went to the website and looked for my company, there are more than a dozen different "target" companies. How would I know which one is the one I use?

help ):

The only 'reference' Target will give is to confirm that you worked there & the dates of employ.
Corp does NOT condone references from leadership.
That said, depending on the relationship you have with your leaders, sometimes individuals may offer to give you a referral but it would be otherwise discouraged.

@redeye58 is correct. The work number is all you can give them. It's dumb, but I think they do this to prevent a libel suit.

Many other large businesses use it. It's meant to be impartial and keep internal hr from having to deal with it. I've used it for job applications and rental agreements and even our mortgage paperwork. It feels weird, but is easy to use.
