Actually beer is what started civilization.
We went from hunter gatherers to farmers the minute someone figured out you needed to stay in one place to plant and harvest the grain to make beer.
Once we started that civilization began to grow and develop.

As an Irish Jew I see plenty of people in my circle who have problems with alcoholism.
Living in Alaska I see what has done to the First Nation and Native Peoples population.
Working with people who have disabilities I see it every day.
I know the crime statistics and serious problems that come from it.
There is a good reason Alaska is the top state per capita for domestic abuse and rape.

However, that does not make me think that drinking in and of itself is a bad thing.
Most things in moderation and in celebration are not harmful.
People with addiction problems are an issue but society can not be built around them.
We certainly need to be aware, help and support them (not put them in jail every time they turn around), but not tailor our every action around them.

That said I think a wine/beer garden in a Target isn't any worse than one in a grocery store as long as the people have to do all their drinking in the garden area and not on the floor but I gather that's not what the geniuses did.
