MEGATHREAD Hang Me (The Softlines Thread)

We are right across the street from a huge hospital/medical complex, but we don't have scrubs. People come in every day hoping to find affordable gowns, pajamas, slippers and robes. They are pretty much SOL.

We don't have the payroll to keep softlines looking decent. They let most of our TMs change their availability to come in late and leave early or only work days. Now, on top if everything else, they have hired yet another TL. She is really, really young and an outside hire. We don't need someone else telling us what to do. We need the hours for us to actually do the work.

So, a while back we had a couple of horrrendous TMs whose idea of doing reshop was to grab handfulls off the z-rack and just stuff everything anywhere. They would hide infant softlines in RTW, girls in intimates and...you get the drift. It's easy to tell the difference between stuff guests misplace and the kind of nonsense I'm talking about. Those TMs have been replaced by a couple more and the shenanigans have started again. I'm just so over it! I almost always close and it takes forever to weed out all the stuff that does not belong in the area. Our TL blames it on guests, other TMs blame it on flow. Tonight I just gave up and left all of it where it was. If they won't address it it's not my problem! Sorry...but I'm so tired and frustrated these days if it wasn't for this forum my head would explode! For real. You would see it on the news. Woman's head explodes in local shopping center.

Ughhh that's the worst. :( at my store we have a tm, who was hired seasonally && no one expected to be kept on.... Yet she is still here six months later & really no better at her job. She walks with zero percent purpose -- I've watched her meander from her section back to the FR to get one lousy hanger and plod back to her zone, in the middle of what she is doing .... Like a complete time suck. Esp because she is a really slow and mediocre zoner .. When we started seasonally she got caught multiple times and spoken to by 3 separate LODs for taking her own areas go backs from zoning & dumping it into reshop before the end of the night so she didn't have to do it. One time it was like a half a cart of infants reshop && the FR girl that night almost strangled her. Her more recent solution to not wanting to do her own go backs is literally dumping everything in a huge clump on a rack at the end of her last zone. (Which, news flash, is easy to tell it was her / a ™). I also found out the other day she lied to another soft lines tm and claimed she could not understand how to operate the portable phone / would not cover a break .... Which is bs because I've personally taught her the phone & forced her to cover my FR breaks before because we have worked shifts where it was literally just the two of us ..... I feel bad because she is a nice girl but she is just awful at her job. She never responds to walkie calls directed at her - even from LODs - until the second or third time. She won't answer back-up cashier calls or call boxes unless specifically told by someone she "has" to . I used to think I could help motivate her / teach her things to make her life (and in turn the whole softlines dept. lives ) easier - but much like you I've just decided if no one else cares it's not going to be my problem.

Same thing is going on at my store. Our TL and ETL blame us and we blame flow. I honestly have no idea which TMs are responsible for this cause clearly it isn't guests. I also am exhausted, frustrated and just all around pissed at what's going on. Most nights I work fitting room and zone all of RTW by myself. It's overwhelming. I've discussed this with half the ETLs at my store and none care. At this point I'm BEGGING to be taken out of softlines and put anywhere else.

I, too, can tell when a team member is ditching their reshop v. putting it away correctly v. a guest leaving product in the wrong place.
Same story in my store... flow+bad softlines tms+ few hours + guess = target earthquake look

Yup. We are a busy A-volume store. We have so much reshop there's no where to put it all. LODs are on my case every night about how the fitting room looks. I can't clean it up, zone, answer the phone, and help guests all at the same time. It's impossible.

At my store if we run out of time, we just bring it back lol. No need to pretend. We all feel that if we pretend we got it all done, they'll cut hours because they believe it's plausible for us to finish in such a time crunch. Flow just puts thing anywhere, though. Right now there's dresses and shirts together, different brands together etc etc etc because they put it the first place they found space. Hours so low no one's been able to fix it because the way it is now, you'd have to take everything off and start over.. And we all have 4 hour shifts only.

Ugh softlines. I'm stuck closing 4-5 nights a week due to other tm's availabilities. I cannot leave or get more cross-training til we hire more people. The whole zone is usually a mess. My TL told me that our team isn't performing well as a whole. I've spoken to a couple SrTLs/ETLs about how bad it is in softlines and they're just like "oh well." I hate feeling trapped. I wish there was something I could do.

I know how you feel. After over 5 years of almost exclusively closing in SL, I finally was able to ninja my way into Deli. Don't give up hope and make sure the TLs of areas you're interested in know you in a good way!

Definitely get with the team leaders of the places you want to cross train in. I have been known to do small bits of training at a time for sbux, fitting room, etc. . . . Basically, grab the TM for 15 or 20 minutes every time we are scheduled at the same time and start with the basics. Before long, you are halfway trained and it just makes sense to the store to complete your training. Ask your HRTM to print learning plans for areas you are interested in. You may already know how to do some of it. Offer to cover breaks too. That's another way to sneak in some extra cross training. If you aren't scheduled 8 hours, offer to come in for an hour before your shift starts to get some training. I know hours are tight, but just one hour might be ok. (I would point out any call ins as a way to justify it). Also, I know a couple of instances where a team member took a shift from the swap board that he wasn't trained for. Ended up getting approved and the TM got trained for it. In that case, it was an area similar to the TMs original area. (Cashier took SD shift, HL took electronics shift).

Team Leaders all want good, motivated Team Members. I have current baristas who were cross trained in sneaky small doses. Before anyone realized it, I had them on my schedule. One of the ETLs has told me to keep away from her teams, lol.

My store doesn't allow cross training like that. It has to be formally approved, especially for an area like the service desk. I'm begging for anything to get out of softlines: food ave training, more hardlines training, and I'm to be trained in pricing and POG as soon as there's hours. I told our ETL-GE I'd work cart attendant. He said no :(

I feel like anyone who's ever worked baby can work in most areas of hardlines. Is formal training really necessary? Either way, hope you can get cross trained soon. Closing sl 4-5 nights a week can be annoying. I changed my availability years ago because they had me closing every night (I still close, but less often). I blamed it on the bus schedule, but really I just didn't wanna go crazy. Hiring in a way that only one person is doing most of the closing seems like a bad decision to me.

Idk if you guys remember me complaining about how bad shoes is in my store (presentation and flow I guess have been pushing everything to the first empty spot so nothing is zoned properly and it's hard to find things), but the former shoe specialist was zoning over there and she brought the issue up and the leadership did their midday zone there today and I'm now having positive feels about the leaders who worked today.

Several tms on our sl team have changed their availability to weekends only or very late weeknights. I tried to do the same and was denied because my reason wasn't good enough. Plus I need as many hours as possible. Most of the rest of the tms only prefer 20-ish per week.

Also we don't have a dayside team per se, its my TL and one older TM who works the fitting room, until the closing shift comes in.

How are your store doing with te adjecency for this month? Who is in charge Vmtl, stl, mbtm or tms ...? Enough hours, tms?

We had to pull tms from a neighboring store. Most of our presentation team left. ETL-SF is in charge with SrTL and Sltl backing her up. Vmtl might be involved too. I was supposed to be trained to help out but there weren't enough hours :(

Vmtl should work in this, is souposed to know how it works and is the one who has the hours! Stl can help, And partner with tms. Etl-sl and srtl for hardlines OK

We have one ETL for the entire sales floor and she and the sales floor SrTL have been in charge of the presentation team cause our PPTL is on LOA. Im not sure if the Vmtl was part of it or not. Probably. But she tends to spend a lot of time in hardlines unless she's changing the mannequin outfits or something.

Maybe because Soflines is harder.... every person that work hardlines for a period of time doesn't want to work softlines again..
